Pacific Railway 40 foot Airstream- San Leandro, CA

There are Airstream projects and then there are... well, wrecked Airsteam Rarities.

One is a bowling alley at the Silverton Casino in Henderson, Nevada. Other than that, there may be more... but I cannot recall the Thread about these Airstreams made for the Union Pacific Railroad.

Since I need to keep this short... I will post some photographs of this HEAP. It is baking in the SUN, totality or not of the Western USA. If there is any interest, I will include other photographs.

This was one of several unusual encounters on our nearly three weeks in places my wife and I do not want to return.... ever.

Obviously someone took one ID Plate off this Wreck of the West... and a double axle? California trailer standards must have been covered as long as this beast was not being... towed?

OK... I have tried to renew my annual subscription without success and the photos will not post. Lore at Airstream Support says she cannot as she is a tech support person. I need some kind of support... can someone explain how to gladly provide my $20 renewal?

My membership expired while we were Boondocking. I hope that this clears things up and now the photographs.

Guess not.

One Plate says: Pacific Railway Sales- San Leandro, Calif.

Next Plate says: 12804 E. Firestone Blvd. Santa Fe Springs, California #360- #42-2010

Third Plate says: State of California- This Trailer Coach Approved For Sale in California #1560- (maybe VIN #) 7142A

All you have to do is sign in. No need to renew anything.

I'm weirdly interested in seeing Pics. I also needed to renew to post pics last month, something to do with having posted more than the free account allows; still worth it to me. My 33' 1960 has the same Pacific Railway Sales plate too.

Ray are you referring to this one near Flagstaff?

Also to clarify -- not sure why I thought NUTZ's photo was near Flagstaff. Maybe I read that somewhere else, and maybe not!

Happy Trails,

If those photographs did not discourage you about a possible restoration... maybe these will help.

We did not take the time to check out the tires... but one door was off the hinges laying in the grass, that obviously ventilates the interior during the Winter Months.

I had to ask myself. OK. Something 'big' happened to the front of this monster. But... the interior?

Timeless Travel Trailers: Western Pacific Airstream
(wonderful interior photographs at their website. Googled Western Pacific Airstream.

Compare their interior photographs to... mine. Yikes!

"The Western Pacific Railroad Company commissioned only ten of the 40′ Airstream trailers in 1962. They were used for Maintenance of Way Foreman.

The design of these Airstreams was different from others of the same model year in that they were symmetrical from end to end rather than having the sloping tail. They were created by riveting two 20′ trailers together in the middle. The trailers were mounted on 50′ railroad flatcars when new and spent the rest of their working days on the rails. Most railroads used their retired passenger equipment for MOW work. The Western Pacific had very modest passenger operations and ran a very tight budget. This kept almost their entire passenger fleet in revenue operation until the 1970′s with the inception of Amtrak.

For Western Pacific, the investment in the Airstreams made good economic sense. The Western Pacific was acquired by the Union Pacific Railroad in 1989. The Airstreams were dismounted from their flatcars for the first time in 27 years. One unit went to the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola, CA. Another unit went to the California State Railroad Museum in Old Sacramento, CA and the remaining units were sold in various auctions. It is noted that two were destroyed while in railroad service. One of only 5 in public possession, Timeless Travel Trailers were honored to restore this amazing piece of history."
