Songs about driving that you may not know…

Amanda Shaw, "Cruise," from the Album "Good Southern Girl." (But I have four albums by Amanda Shaw that I listen to while driving, whether the songs have driving as a theme or not; Cajun/zydeco music with a perky female vocalist will definitely keep you awake and alert behind the wheel!)

Sawyer Brown, "My Baby Drives a Buick," from the album "Buick." Also "Drive Away" from the album "Outskirts of Town."

Another great tune, TravlinMan -- thanks.

Welcome back Protagonist! Amanda Shaw seems like a real talent, but I could not find any videos of Cruise on YouTube. Her style definitely fits with your description. Thanks.

Peter

My first exposure to Amanda Shaw was actually a movie at the Aquarium of the Americas IMax theater, called "Hurricane on the Bayou." Amanda was still in high school when she made that movie in 2006. I made a point of downloading her albums from Amazon after that.

And because there is tremendous value in irony, I sometimes keep myself awake while driving by listening to the band called Asleep at the Wheel. Particularly their song "Miles and Miles of Texas" every time my travels take me in that direction…

Asleep at The Wheel is a fantastic band and Ray Benson can really punch out the vocals. One of my all time favorites is their live cover of Route 66 and don't forget House of Blue Lights. They also do a pretty good job on Jordan's One O'clock Jump.

Did you know that Miles and Miles of Texas was written by Diane Johnson when she was writing songs for Gene Autry in the 50's but wasn't a hit till Asleep at the Wheel covered it in 1976?

Although Bob, you may prefer Dianna Krall's version of Route 66? Her vocals start at 4:30 after an incredible guitar opening.

Never knew she covered that, very nice. Route 66 is such a classic I would guess there are hundreds of great covers out there. The Stones did good cover of it in the 60s

Here is a tune for TravlinMan's stop in Mountain View, Arkansas. From a venue called Taylor's Barn, here is Sons of the Ozarks with Jim Croce's "Age" -- a touching number with a good beat about journeying on life's highway I guess:

"I've been up and down and 'round and 'round and back again,
Been so many places I can't remember where or when.
And my only boss was the clock on the wall
And my only friend never really was a friend at all.

I've traded love for pennies; sold my soul for less.
Lost my ideals in that long tunnel of time.
And I've turned inside out and 'round about and back and then
Found myself right back where I started again."

Maybe a little somber for this thread, but here goes . . .

Yee hah!

PS -- 3:55 -- The Tennessee Stud

Another classic "road song" albeit another not-so-fast and somewhat somber number.

"Some trails are happy ones,
Others are blue.
It's the way you ride the trail that counts,
Here's a happy one for you."

The next tune on YouTube is "Tumbling Tumbleweed" by Ken Curtis, another old cowboy road song.

Happy Trails!

Peter

A repeat posting of a great song that came up in the iTunes mix this morning. The road trip taken by Michael and friends was a little unusual . . .

Cheers,

Peter

This song closed out the film Michael about an angel with wings, with three newspaper people, and dog Sparky, on an oddball cross-country road trip to get a scoop on Michael. Great cast - Jean Stapleton, William Hurt, Andie McDowell, and John Travolta -- and hysterical scenes in various tourist attractions and restaurants on the way back to Chicago. Also a great love story, it turns out.

Another good dance tune IMO, with the film's closing scene showing an other-worldly kind of dance . . . (gotta see the movie!) . . .
. . .

PS -- Oops, the old link does not work. Here is a fresh one:

This all time great has to be one of the best road songs of the century. There are many videos of it but this is my favorite version, 9:25 minutes recorded live at Merriweather Post Pavillion . Hard to believe that was 40 years ago.

Definitely a good one! Thanks.

Did you watch the Showtime series Roadies? Really good music and road trips. Posts #186 and #248 have some tunes from the show (clips anyway), and JB's Load Out is in there. If your cable TV includes Showtime, you can watch the 10-episode series still on Showtime on Demand. There are some YouTube clips also I believe. The plot can be a little cumbersome and inconsistent, but the combo of the music and the road trips is compelling. Also -- many performers like JB and Lindsey Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac) put in touching cameo appearances throughout the series.

Thanks again for the great JB song!

Peter

PS -- Running on Empty has a great beat too IMO.
