There is a fairly low probability that Long Island NY will get even tropical storm winds [> 39 MPH]:

Dorian is going to come pretty close to this Diamond Shoals buoy IMO:

. . . and this familiar chart may show the eye passing overhead:

This chart appears to be rising more quickly than forecast earlier this morning IMO.

The eye may be nearby?

Folks in the Outer Banks of North Carolina received bad flooding and storm surge this morning, with some being trapped in attics and second floor areas. See the previous chart for how quickly the waters rose at the Hatteras Coast Guard Station.

Prayers for everyone affected by Dorian, especially for the Bahamas.

The news coverage is truly shocking and sad.

The residual flooding from Dorian is still affecting lots of inland areas, similar to Hurricane Florence in 2018, such as this location in South Carolina:

Using the interactive map at the Southeast River Forecast Center, one can check out other rivers, if you have family or friends in a certain area:

I haven't been following this thread, but wanted to mention that, although most news focus was on the American impacts, 80% of the province of Nova Scotia lost power last night due to Dorian. Just FYI for anyone who might be considering a jaunt to that area.

There is a thread about some forum folks headed to Newfoundland in an Interstate. As I understand it, the Sidney ferry has been cancelled for the last couple of days. Even though it is now downgraded to post-tropical, they are estimating the winds at Cat 2.

Looks like the rain is mostly on the North and West side of the storm. The Wind is mostly offshore around St George's Bay and Stephenville. This completes the tour of my former military brat residences (I went from Ernest Harmon AFB, Newfoundland to Charleston AFB to McGuire AFB.)

We just donated two tents and a whole lot of other essential survival goods to the Bahamas recovery effort yesterday to a local ministry that has an established Mission in the Bahamas. We haven't used the tents since acquiring an Airstream. One was a brand new two room cabin style, and hopefully some family can take refuge in it in the next few days. The mission is local to Jacksonville and they have an affiliated airlift operation in St. Augustine with clearance to land there.

While they are evacuating many to Florida via cruise ships, more lack the required documentation to make the trip so providing shelter to these folks is top priority. Small operations like these folks can make an immediate impact in the lives of those suffering so much.

When we left for Charleston, we loaded up our 57 Chevy wagon to the roof with parkas, sleds, boots and all sorts of household goods and took it over to our maid/nanny's home in Stephenville to give to her and her quite large family. I had never seen it before and it was quite modest to say the least. They were extremely grateful. While a lot has changed there over the last 50 years, I was impressed at how meager most folks live to this day in the Province. Many are still lobstermen and fishermen, but today, the Cod no longer run, and there is a season on the lobster. I don't know how they get by. I guess the tourist season helps a bit, but it's short. But the landscape is breathtaking as is the Seascape. Well worth going to visit if you get a chance.

Thank you both for the reminders. I just contacted friends in PEI, where we went twice in the 90's in the 25'. A magical place.

Prayers for the Bahamas . . . as someone there said a few days ago . . . Dorian is a major change for this entire generation.

Question Travel Forecasts

I've not followed this thread. I was busy evacuating w/o reservations.

Anyway this crossed my world this morning early. If you're offended feel free to move along to another thread.

I'm making no judgement. I'm just looking at what transpired and passing it along. Hopefully we will all use the best available source when deciding to travel.

Thanks, in advance, for being considerate!

FYI Mike's Weather Page now has a YouTube channel:

I could not get that page to open from his home page, but this may result from my Firefox privacy settings. [Edit -- I turned off pop-up-blocking, and the video plays -- nice!]

Great how he goes through various tools on his site!
