Wow Rob, now I feel like I got hosed on my payload, lol...... I wonder why mine is lower?
I’d be game for a fishing caravan Rob, all kinds of places here for all kinds of trout! Let me know when you plan to be anywhere in CO and we can make it happen.
Wulf, I love that system you have. I need room for a couple dogs, so I plan to get a truck topper and leaning towards a bedrug liner.... not sure if dogs would be okay on that deck, maybe. How much weight does that add?

Yes, that would be fun. I fell in with a bad crowd (my mother warned me 'bout that) about twenty-five years ago and took up fly fishing. Through most of that time, I have considered the Pagosa Springs area my "home water." I've never been comfortable wading big water (even the San Juan around Pagosa can be way too raucous for this teetering old man). But, I've had mountains of fun entertaining trout on some of the smaller rivers and streams.
The photo in my earlier posting was of me on Slough Creek in Yellowstone, just north of Third Meadow. It was 2006, and I went on one of the "horse trips" that Blue Ribbon Flies does... there were six "fisher-people), two wranglers, one outfitter/cook, and the guide. Dang, it was glorious... sight casting to 22-inch native rainbows, much of it with a hand-planed bamboo stick (although the rod in the photo is a Winston IM6, "TMF"... casts like radar).
Ah, the memories... I'll be thinking about this the rest of the day.

Adds 220 lbs. could throw some carpet down on top for the dogs and then add a topper and get the best of both worlds :-)
We only have one 60 pound dog so she rides with us and the kids up in the cab. I am thinking about sticking her kennel out back in the bed though... it’s a bit cramped up front.
I’m game for some fly fishing!

It is that time of year when thoughts of fly fishing really start to ramp up.
I was up on the Bushkill in Pa yesterday and 68 degrees, but regrettably pouring rain and high water.
Thinking of heading out to the Henrys Fork this year to visit friends.
I wont have time for towing my AS out, will probably fly.
Found a very tempting movie on amazon prime, (The Fly Highway?). I could see taking two weeks of vacation and towing out for that in another year.

Rob, in Fall 2006, I fished slough creek as well. Me and a friend hiked in to the third lake. It was a great day, dry fly fishing with large drakes for those big cut throats.
I vividly remember past the second lake, we were over ran by the horse folk, lol. All I could think of was, darn, wish I would have thought of that!
I am heading back out there this summer, can’t wait..

What cab/bed size did you get. I am facing a decision later this year. I currently use a 2000 Tundra which is my TV and second (very useful car) but have a 2014 VW TDI wagon for daily driver, which I love (40+ mpg). That one will be going back to VW as part of the emission scandal buyback this year (I have till December to turn it in). Trying to decide on keeping the Tundra for my TV, and getting another efficient daily driver; or get rid of both and get a newer pickup to handle both duties. I just hate the thought of a pickup as a daily driver because of the mileage. I'm kind of a dork so I'm comparing the cost of registering and insuring the Tundra, and what the offset that will be on having just one vehicle, albeit with less economy. I also drive less than 12,000 miles a year (live/work in a small town) so the delta on decreased fuel economy isn't such a huge factor like it is for you with your long daily commute.
Anyway, I have that F150 ecoboost on my radar as a possible replacement/single vehicle. Will be looking forward to hearing how you like it as you get some usage towing your 23 with it. (I'm in a 23Fb but still considering switching to a D corner bed as well).
Congrats on the truck in any case.

Well, PC, we've got somewhere around 10,000 miles towing the 23D with the 2015 F150. We've towed both in "the flatlands" in Texas and deep into the Colorado Rockies. In every situation, it's proven to be a great match... gobs of power, rock solid stable, acceptable fuel economy, and comfortable as all get out.
Ours is the 3.5 EcoBoost, Max Tow package, 5 1/2" bed. "Console" thing between the front seats, 36-gallon fuel tank, XLT trim level (we prefer fabric seats). Also, impressive safety rating and the aluminum body saves weight and won't succumb to body cancer.
Obviously, I think it worthy of your cosideration.

PC, my truck is just Like Rob’s. I’m sure it’s different being a 2018, but those stats he posted are like mine.
The only things it doesn’t have that I wish it did is the BLISS blind spot monitoring, big tow mirrors, and adaptive cruise control. Believe it or not it also lacks built in garage door connectivity which is strange.
I could have went with the Lariat trim, but the cost pushed me out into hav8mg a payment, and I’d dint want that right now, so I went with the XLT. I also think (not sure) that the XLT gets a higher payload because it has less equipment on/in it.
I’ll have 500miles in it after this week and let you know how it fairs as a daily driver....

2017 f150 xlt
We got our 2017 first week of Sept and love it. I'll miss our TDI Touareg but payload was the main factor to moving up to a full size truck. I am a toyota fan but the mpg and payload wasn't sufficient for 4 of us, our family dog and all the toys we can/want/plan to bring.
So, without all the bells and whistles, the highlights (must have when I did my research were) max tow, max payload, 36 gal tank, and tow mirrors. We have the 3.5 EB, 3.73's, 6.5 bed with a whopping #2541 payload!
Stuff I added when I got the truck was just a spray in liner and a DECKED systems (after googling over wulfraats sexy setup)
Lot's more (truck mods and toys) to add down the road but will take it slow since its been over a year when we started this adventure, boat load of stuff we're still learning.
p.s. I forgot to mention we use 1K bars on an Equalizer, we've only taken Lilly Belle on the one trip and once to dealer for check up and so far so good, no missing screws or pop rivets

I find this thread and folks here so enjoyable vs some of the other ramblings in this BB. So much so that I may never move up a size to the 25ft when we retire.
There is one thread out there pushing 1 ton trucks, which may be more enjoyable to tow with, but there is less ride comfort vs a half ton the rest of the time. And doesn't it really come down to each his own ?
I have been converted to Toyota vehicles, but will take a look at the F150.

Oh, Fred, I know just what you mean. Having owned our '96 Toyota Land Cruiser for some nineteen years, it was more than "vehicle," heck, it was "family." Linda and I were both a bit teary-eyed when we sold it... but took some comfort that it went to a friend that loves it and enjoys it regularly. In the couple of years that we've had the F150, we've become true converts, though... it suits us perfectly.

Rob,
Looks like you had a serious sense of adventure. Sweet ride.
This is my original that hooked me to Toyota. 1988, still going strong, all original, no major mechanical repairs... but the rust is starting to creep in since he is keeping it outside (sacrilege).
My brother bought her from me and she now is retired at the farm, although fully licensed and hits the road for fun.
Sadly it sounds like he may be selling her, but my stable is full and really needs to be inside or someplace dry.
Was just reading that Toyota is coming out with a new Tundra.... could it possibly have more payload and towing capacity? How about a mid size diesel... Will probably be disappointed on both, but hope springs eternal.

But then I got on the thread the other day and saw Rich had bought a “FORD”TRUCK and got really sick. All you V6 TURBO guys need to Drink the Koolaid and get a 3/4 ton Diesel.
Haha sorry for the rant. Cold meds do crazy thing to my brain.
CONGRATS ON THE NEW TRUCK RICH! Looks awesome and will serve you well.
I would show you my payload sticker but don’t want to make you guys jellous.

Hey, what a guy... freshly arrived back from death's door with the flu, and the first thing he does is poke us in the eye!
Welcome back, Ronnie, super-glad you're all well now... or, mostly so we missed you here at the clubhouse.
PS: Make that "twin" turbo!

Yes, the 'Cruiser has had some fantastic adventures... I've had it over its wheel arches in the muddy San Juan on the west side of Comb Ridge (Utah) pulling out full size domestic pickup trucks that weren't about to budge on their own. Oh, we hit a full-grown cow elk about 30-miles north of Blanding, Utah... sixty miles an hour pulling our little Casita. "Totaled" the elk (what a racket!), and there was not a single bit of damage to the Land Cruiser... that ARB "bull bar" on the front is amazing.

Ronnie!! Your alive. This is my starter truck. Just in lease for a few years. If I like it, I would venture into a 250, 2500, or whatever GMC and Chevy make.
Fred, I really like Toyota’s as well. I have. 2005 4Runner that has almost 200k. Only major thing I did on it has been a new radiator. Bought the part for $78, 4 bolts and a few hose clamps later, it’s all good. Dealer/mechanic wanted $1000 for the job.
Right now with my size trailer and needs, my top choice for a tow vehicle would be a new Land Cruiser. Love this things, but pricey!!
Toyota is definitely behind in the truck game, old suspension, old V8, same old 6 speed transmission. Don’t get me wrong, very reliable but lacking gas mileage and payload as you said. That’s just my opinion.
Oh, and talk about throwing up, my car buddy just sent me a notice about the new diesel F150 3.0 L. Coming out next month for $44k. 2000 pound payload, 30 MPG, 11000 tow capability.
If only I would have saw this a few days ago, I could have easily waited,......

Rich, really like the older 4 Runners, some real classics still on the road. Not crazy about the designs in the past few years though, hope to see that change.
To that point, went to the dealers for some brake work (sure wish we had a quality shop outside of dealers around here), but while waiting was walking around in the showroom and this beautiful navy blue SUV called me. The new Land Cruiser (17?). Looks just like the old J100 series with a few modifications. Great to see the change "back".
BTW, I looked up the specs on the 3.5 F150 and very impressive HP/Torque/MPG . Only thing of note was that curb weight was 900 lbs less than the Tundra. It will get some very serious consideration though with the mpg.
But came across this little news story/rumor about the Tundra, so will sit tight for a while.
Doubt I would buy it new, but on the wild chance they added a mid size diesel and uppped the payload/ tow capacity by a several hundred pounds.... will see.
Either way it will bring down the resale on existing Tundras and would grab one of those for a few years, as expect it would pull my 23 just fine.
Ronnie, good to see you again and hope youre all healed up soon. I hear the flu is rampant and that the vaccine was only 30pct effective ?
