Great Beginning. Bad ending.

Posted 03-08-2010 at 08:15 PM by BillB44

Before hitting the road we drove to Lowell, about two miles from Bisbee to see the much read-about Shady Dell and Dot’s Diner. Too cute for words. But I’ll try—with the help of some pics. Like stepping back into the 50’s—without all the A-Bomb fear. It’s a trailer park of restored Airstreams et al, that they rent by the night. The diner is tiny but just right. The gal that works the office is even dressed and coifed a la the 40’s/50’s.

Despite the charm of Dot’s though, we broke fast at the Bisbee Breakfast Club because of its rave ratings. It didn’t disappoint. The place was packed by the time we left, toting a pair of cinnamon rolls for later.

After this delightful morning we had a great and easy drive up Hwy. 80 across the southeastern-most corner of AZ. Unbelievably light traffic. In fact, if it weren’t for the occasional white & green Border Patrol truck, there’d be no traffic at all.

Acting on a tip from our Café Roka water, we took a short detour to see the little hamlet of Portal. More accurately, to see the wild natural pass formed between two mountain crags looming over it. The road narrowed and we almost got stuck but were able to turn around and take a couple of pics.

From there it was up to I-10 and the Las Cruces KOA. Now, we’re new to KOA’s but this one does have stuff going for it compared to the more homogenized RV resort type parks. A little more remote—not in the city, but overlooking it, and our favorite three letters: F H U. And, with these full hook-ups, we realized we could try out the flat screen TV in the ‘Spud for the first time as the Academy Awards was staring in 90 minutes.

We unhitched, made a quick trip into LC for needed groceries and beverages (read wine) and made it back in time for the opening ceremonies. And this is where the bad ending comes in. With food on the stove and our two glasses of red wine sitting on the table, Kathy opened an overhead cupboard and a small bin (everything is in bins to keep stuff from rattling around) tumbled out for freedom. It fell four feet, hit a wine glass and sent the contents spraying over the dinette, walls and one of our fancy shmancy Pendleton throw pillows. After about 3 seconds of staring we both let out a few choice words then set to work wiping, cleaning, mopping, etc.

Moral: Use caution when opening overhead compartments as some items may shift during travel!

We missed the first half of the Oscars but were able to get most of the wine out. Aren’t you relieved?

Bill , Thanks for sharing your story and adventures! We are looking forward to getting out that way again. We are searching for a trailer, its a fun adventure! We love it out West and purchased 14 acres of land about 8 miles west of Bisbee last year. Hope to build a off the grid home there or travel with a airstream thru out the west. We have been to the Breafast Club to and loved it! Your little story felt like we were on a mini vacation . Your trailer looks awsome too! GK.
