Description: What can I say about this campground 8 miles from our home but, incredible! This is boondocking at its finest, but with wonderful hot showers and newly remodeled and seemingly always clean bathrooms (never have seen so many park staff). The campground is wide open with over 30 to 50 feet between spaces, and most are pull-throughs. Mid-week and even weekends off-season? Perfect. It is a short walk to the wide expansive beach. And oh, BTW, the weather here is best Sept.-March (no marine layer). Get this, $25 and night-unless you are a senior- and first come/ first serve, Dec through May 21, and on Reserve America after that. Plenty of activity in Pismo Beach, surfing, fishing, shopping, dune buggies, long-long beach walks, etc. I could go on and on, but one last thing...this campground was featured in Sunset magazine's April 2014 edition, so we'll keep this post between us AirDreamers and the 30 million Sunset readers out there.

Pros: Close to beach, close to town, lots to do, large sites
Cons: Can be busy in the summer months.

I've stayed here in the off season and on season and it is two different parks. Camping here in the off season is best. It is relaxed and since they are not on reservations, you just pull in and camp where you want. Early arrival?, no problem. Half the campground is closed during the week in the off season as they don't get enough visitors to justify keeping it open. The camp hosts are relaxed as are the rangers, and the entry station is pretty much unmanned. The weather is generally nicer too, but it can rain.

In the summer, it is crowded, and forget about trying to check in early. They have huge flashing sign that says no check in before 2PM...and they will make you wait outside the campground until then. In my 40 years of camping, this is the first time I have ever seen this. Also the marine layer (fog) sets in so it can be gloomy during the morning hours, and sometimes all day, but no rain.

Overall, this is a wonderful campground though, with very large open sites. The huge beach is just on the other side of the adjacent sand dunes, and unlike most beaches in California, you can take your dog. Downtown Pismo Beach is a short bike ride, or walk down the beach away and there are plenty of shops to browse and plenty of good eateries.
