Description: This campground is located in Marathon, Texas, which is the north entrance to Big Bend National Park. It is located on Highway 90. The campground is next door to the Marathon Motel, which is a restored 1940's "motor court". There is a really pretty courtyard with a fireplace where there is a fire every evening. Each site is dirt/rock, and level. 20,30, & 50 amp service is at each site, along with water & sewer. The water is palatable as well. Each site also has a wooden picnic table, but no fire ring or BBQ grill. The owner (both of the motel & RV park) is onsite, and a visible presence every day. His name is Daniel Self. There is a telescope available for rent, and the motel office sells 10 lb bags of ice for $1.87 a bag. There are stand-alone bathrooms, but they each only have one toilet & one shower. There is also a laundry, $1.25 per load. The clientele is a mix of overnighters, as well as people spending some time in the area. There are also a lot of bicycle tours that tent camp there, which is also permitted. There do not appear to be any long-term residents. We stayed one week, and the rate was $125.00. They offer a Good Sam discount. Marathon has very limited services. Two breakfast/lunch places, the Famous Burro Bar, and the bar and restaurant associated with The Gage Hotel, both of which are highly recommended. The "weekend" for the town is Monday & Tuesday, so a lot of places are closed then. There is also the French Grocer, that has a limited selection of items. Basically, if you want it, take it with you. You can also go to Alpine, which is 30 miles west, for a passable grocery store. There is also an RV supply store with most of the basics. We enjoyed our stay, and would most certainly return. Recommended.

Pros: Scenic views and proximity to BBNP
Cons: No shade or trees (but this is Trans-Pecos West Texas)

Stayed here in 2012 on the way to BBNP and Terlingua. Ejoyed the outdoor fireplace and had a great dinner at the Gage Hotel just up the street.
