Description: We left home intending to go to Ozark Trav-L-Park near Troy, Alabama. Following the location I found on the Internet I went North on Highway 231 out of Troy and kept going and going.

Eventually, I wound up in Montgomery and it didn't take much for us to decide to go to one of our favorite campgrounds, Gunter Hill. This US Army Corps of Engineers (COE) campground is about 15 miles West of Montgomery just off Old Selma Road. An alternative route is via Highway 80. There are two loops of campsites at Gunter Hill, Catoma and Antioch. Catoma is only open March 1 through September 30th. This is our preferred area since it seems to get fewer campers, but Antioch is just fine. We arrived on October 25th. The leaves were in good color this weekend for the area, temperatures during the day were in the mid to upper 70s and at night it didn't get cold enough to run the heater.

On Sunday, we took a side trip to Prarie Creek Campground, which is about 15 miles West of Gunter Hill. It is an "improved" COE campground. This means there are concrete pads. Like Gunter Hill there are no sewer hookups. We really liked Prarie Creek. There are quite a few campsites with good views of the river. The concrete pads actually are concrete driveways that extend to the paved road. Very nice. We'll stay here next time. Prarie Creek also has a bicycle/hiking path that is not accessible by motorized vehicles. 2003 Rates at Gunter Hill are $16/night and rates at Prarie Creek are $16/night for riverfront sites and $14/night for others. Both locations have primitive campsites that are accessible only by hiking.
