Description: Lost Maples, several miles north of the hamlet of Vanderpool, is most famous for the fall colors in the isolated stands of maple trees in its canyons. In October and November and, to a lesser extent in the spring, the park can be crowded. The remainder of the year, it is practically deserted.

There are 30 well-spaced, level, paved,W/E sites and a number of primitive campgrounds. Away from the high seasons, there are usually fewer than five sites occupied.

The best route to Lost Maples follows the South Fork of the beautiful Guadalupe River from Kerrville. The road is narrow and twisty; I was glad my trailer is 8' wide and 22' long. Bigger trailers will have to work a bit harder.

In addition to the easy and level "Maple Trail", there are 11 miles of hiking trails that are not for the weak or infirm. There are several climbs of 45 degrees right up the sides of mountains.

Pros: Nice and quiet - off season, great hiking
Cons: Little or no shade cover at camp sights

Nice park. Great get-away for quiet relaxation when maples aren't doing their thing. Longer hikes involve negotiating some water and some fairly steep climbs. Camp sight area is a small loop and nothing really special to look at, but clean and well maintained. No play ground for small kids. Drive to and from the park in Texas hill country is beautiful (particularly if you like "rugged"). If you are going to be in the area, take a look at the other hill country parks, as well.
