Description:

Bahia Honda State Park is located just south of Marathon on US1 in the Florida Keys. It is easily one of the prettiest State Parks in Florida.
In the Buttonwood camping area there are 48 campsites each with water and 30 amp (some have 50 amp). There is a dump site. About 1/3 of the sites (#'s 12-25) are directly on the water, the others within a block. The restrooms are well maintained as are the sites themselves.
The park has lots of beach, boat rentals, a small store, a marina (including dock space for registered campers), a small nature center and reef snorkeling trips leave right from the park.
Had enough sun? Key West is 32 miles down the road. Lots of touristy kitsch but if you leave the tourist drag, an interesting and entertaing place indeed.
As of Janury 2007, sites were $26.00 per night but the county/state add a delightful additional $5.50 per night in fees and taxes. Worth every penny.

Pros:
|
The beach and the weather.
|
Cons:
|
Extremely difficult to get reservations.

Bahia Honda is undeniably a beautiful spot to camp. Nice beach, decent fishing, great birding.
Even in the Summer, the reliable sea breeze keeps things tolerable and as all the sites are two-way the air conditioning option is always available.
For the historically inclined, there is ample evidence on the island of the Florida East Coast Railways route from the mainland to Key West. Right of way, bridge decking and recycled track as railings.
The down side is that it is near impossible to get reservations in the park unless you camp out on the website at the earliest possible time. In the winter, there is a cadre of snowbirds that have mastered ReserveAmerica's nuances to the degree that the spend the entire season moving between the four State Parks in the Florida Keys. Makes it hard for anyone else who doesn't have the luxury of a year's lead time on their itinerary. Walk-ins are almost never accomodated although it has happened.
Very much worth the effort but be patient, plan well ahead and keep rechecking the Reserve America site. Both our trips were the result of last minute cancellations that popped up.

Pros:
|
New Walk-Up Policy
|
Cons:
|
|
|
Bahia Honda has now set aside 8 sites as "walk-up" only. Best bet is to call ahead see if any expected openings and show up as early as you can.
