Cabin In The Woods
Cabin In The Woods
Description As requested I'm sending a some pictures of my 1963 Airstream project which is ongoing. Someday I'd like to polish the exterior if I can manage it a little at a time. There is still some woodwork, electrical wiring and painting to do inside, reupholstering the couch/pull out bed in the front end. Stuff to putz around with this coming summer. The picture shows it next to my brother's little cabin, but we are preparing a spot for it to go off by itself in the woods for placement this summer. I tried doing some chainsaw work this past fall, but am so unsteady on my feet and weak that I didn't manage to get much done. No hurry. I am a lightning survivor and have some nerve damage from that... now partially paralyzed with GBS. I do a little at a time as I am able. I am thankful for my "cabin" in the woods. I hope you like it, too.

Description The propane wall furnace came from an old cabin. It does a nice job of heating the place. I kept the electric heater in the bathroom. No need for air conditioning in northeastern Minnesota, but a good heater is a priority. Between it and the caboose stove I was toasty at thirty below.

Description The flooring is old knotty pine wall paneling reversed so that it is flat without the decorative grooves. I sanded it down and gave it two coats of marine spar varnish. I like the way it turned out.

Description As the trailer was pretty well gutted when I bought it, there isn't a lot inside that is original. The cast iron caboose stove came from a local railroad and was made in the late 1800's. I swapped a guy some firewood several years ago because I like train stuff. Now I get to use it! It burns either wood or coal. I'm making a glass door for it so that I can watch the fire. You can see that in this picture I'm still laying the floor. The wood came from one of our cabins at the resort which I tore down. (After I was hit and disabled by lightning in 1995 we sold the place.) I've been dragging around the 1920's knotty pine paneling for years and now I'm glad I did. To the far left (gray) is a propane wall furnace that I also saved from the torn down cabin. To the far right is where the coach/pull out bed is supposed to be. I'm replacing the worn out foam and upholstering it in black elk hide. I make panels from scraps of leather by cutting squares and then stiching them together like a quilt. I use an old heavy duty Viking sewing machine that I used to use for making mocassins and stuff like that. Good for leather. I get the scraps for free from a friend who makes mucluks. (sp?... winter footwear). I got interested in sewing machines when I was a little boy and used to work the treadle for my grandma on her old Singer. I'm sure I was a real big help to her! I loved watching the transfer of power from the treadle to the wheel to the belt and then making the needle go up and down in the power head. Cool mechanics!

Description I made the little butcher block table to the left from a treadle sewing machine base. Under it is a shelf for the VCR and beneath that is where the firewood goes. My chiropracter gave me the oven/stove top from an RV. Where you see the caboose stovepipe vent through the wall used to be where there was a kitchen stove fan. I tore out the fan and put in a stovepipe pass through... just fits!

Kitchen &
Kitchen & "Office"
Description Looking toward the rearend. I made the end of the counter so that it hinges up and inside is the kitchen wastebasket. Next to it is the "office" where I have my computer. Next to it is a small closet that has the PC and storage for clothes. Beyond it is the little bathroom with toilet, sink and combination shower/tub. The thing on the counter that looks like a pressure canner is actually a 1940's Handi-Hot washing machine. You fill water in it by hand and fit the top which has a motor sealed inside onto the end of the adjitator spindle (sp?). It's big enough for a change of clothes or one set of bedsheets. My brother found me a set of rollers for a wringer washer that will clamp on the other end of the counter and drain into the little bathtub. Cool!

Description This is another view looking toward the rear end. I took out the original narrow single bed and extended the platform so that a regular twin will fit. Under the bed and couch are drawers. I like the blanket as it was hand woven by Mayan Indians. Over the fridge is a microwave and above that storage for pots and pans. You can't see it very well, but under and to the left of the red fire extinguisher are pull out shelves for canned goods.

Description This view is from the bathroom looking to the front. Behind the lawn chair is where the couch is to be. The fish is a large crappy from our lake. If you look above the fish you can see one of the skylights. There's another one near the bathroom at the other end. I can lie in bed and see the stars, sometimes Nookoomisinahn (grandmother moon). The cabinet work isn't done yet, nor trim work.

Description There were two crank up ceiling vents originally, both needed to be replaced... when I checked the prices for new ones I decided to remove the hardware and install clear plexiglass. Glad I did!
