Wheels/Tires for sale
I have 4 Airstream factory wheels, tires and hubcaps for sale.
The wheels are the factory 6-lug steel rims, with clips for the baby moon hub caps. The tires are 7:00x15 Carlisle bias ply tires with a load rating of C, and the hub caps are the baby moons. The wheels came off my 1971 Tradewind and shold fit very many of the dual axle trailers. I believe that the single axle trailers should have a higher load rating for the tires then the ones i am offering, unless it's a really light vintage unit.
The wheels are blasted and freshly powdercoated, ( gloss black) and they look brand new. Som e very minor pitting is visible on one of the wheels, I believe, but the tire mounting areas are perfectly smooth. These wheels are not out of round or otherwise damaged.
The tires are 1 year old and have rolled for about 5000 miles.
The hubcaps are still in the chrome shop, they should be done next week. The hubcaps have the shallow grooves around the outer edge.
I had the tires mounted on the wheels, but not balanced as they should be balanced together with the brake drums.
I changed to Good Year Marathon radials and light alloy wheels recently, so I decided to restore the old wheels and offer them to someone more vintage/authentic oriented. I persoanally like the new tires and wheels much better, for looks and for the weight savings. The new wheels/tires weigh less than the old rim alone, at leat that is what it feels like.
I will have to say that these tires did not balance well on the light alloy wheels. I was told that bias ply trailer tires generally do not balance very well. They do, however, have a very authentic look and they do make the trailer tow well. I hod no problems other than the balancing issue.
These wheels and tires are VERY heavy. I can ship them, but shipping won't be cheap.
PM me if you are interested.

Hey, Uwe!
Can you post a photo of your trailer with the new tires and wheels please? I'd love to see what you chose for custom wheels!
Thanks!

I'd love to see photos also. I'm in the same dilemna, do I stay with the same old heavy wheels or upgrade to lighter alloy wheels?
That is the same question I have as I start thinking about renovating different parts of the trailer. Or is that the "am I renovating or restoring" question?

I willpost pics of the new setup tomorrow.
I bought the Outlaw II from American Racing in a 15x7 size, and the Good Year Marathons.
I guess the photo site is still not up?? It did have pics of the trailer with the new wheels.

Stacia,
I'd rather not separate them, unless another single axle party wants the other two.
Thanks for asking, tough.

Okay, we would be interested in the other two. We also need two.
Problem solved.

The hub caps are still in the chrome shop. I will post a pic of the completed wheel once the hubcaps come back.

Uwe.
Your photo also show the proper distance between the top of the wheel, and the wheel well.
New axles do that.
Another good way for others to determine if they may need axles.

New Axles
Hi Andy,
The new axles made a big difference. I took the trailer home to wash it and try out the new axles and tires. I left in a hurry and did not put the table down or fold up the chair. i also left a plastic container in the sink with flaslights, batteries and a few big butane lighters in it.
When i arrived at home ( 30 miles, backroads) and opened the door, not only was everything in place, but it was EXACTLY in place as I remember it. The new Prodigy brake controller worked great - it and the new brakes made a huge difference.
I had about a finger's width of clearance before, with the trailer leveled and not hooked to the truck. This clearance mostly disappeared with the weight distributing bars hooked up, and the trailer lightly loaded. i feel like I can lod her up now and not worry about it.
Thanks for a set of great axles.

Those wheels look sharp! OutlawII? That's what I think I am going with and I might even change the wheels on our Burb Tow rig to match (Couple of the steel wheels on it are warped my tire mas says).
What is the size of the rim (width) and tires size?

toaster,
The wheels are by American Racing, are made in US, and are of the size 15x7
The wheel style is OutlawII, as you suspected.
The tires are Good Year Marathon, 225/75R15 load range D
They make OutlawII wheels for your Suburban as well.
I paid aout $80.00 per wheel, if i remember right.
One thing, make sure and get the center caps that have removeable caps, instead of what i got, which come off through the rear of the wheel.
I will change these caps soon, so that I can check the hubs without removing the wheels.

Follow up to Uwe
Uwe, you had mentioned early on in this thread that you felt the wheels needed to be increased to 16" diam. to offset the squatier radial designs. You said the 225x75x15 were about 2" shorter than the bias 700x15.
I have read 1', do you stand by your 2"?
But when you bought new wheels why then did you not get 16"ers?
Do Marathons not come in 16?
Any second thoughts on switching to radial from the bias?
S&V
OH what did you get for your old wheel tires if I may ask?
And did you ever post the pic of hub caps?
And do you know the wheel lug (stud) spacing on the wheels? i.e. 6x5in. or 5x4.75in. etc.?

OutlawII
I want to join the Outlaw II club! But I can't find those wheels with a 6×5.5 hole pattern. Does this mean that I can't be an Outlaw II?

outlaw II wheels
I bought a set of the outlaw II wheels today. They are not in the catalog, but they are available. Sears cares them, as well as most tire dealers. PJ

Larger wheels.
CAUTION
Use extreme caution when increasing wheel diameters.
Most trailer models "DO NOT" have enough wheel well clearance to accept larger wheel/tire combinations.
To do so, especially if the axles show signs of settling, and the trailer is loaded for travel, will allow the tires to rub on the plastic wheel wells, usually resulting in a fire that you won't see until it's way too late to put out.
Then, the fun really begins when you deal with your insurance company, and they find out that "YOUR" modification was the cause of the fire.
If Airstream felt that 16 inch tires were better than 15 inch tires, they would have installed them.
Again, use extreme caution.
Andy

Wheels
Uwe, you had mentioned early on in this thread that you felt the wheels needed to be increased to 16" diam. to offset the squatier radial designs.
Did I say that?
You said the 225x75x15 were about 2" shorter than the bias 700x15.
I have read 1', do you stand by your 2"?
My tape measure says it's at least 2 inches. My Carlisles 7x15 size tires are 30.75in across, not taken int account the crown of the tread in the center of the tire. The Marathons are 28.5in across, give and take a rivet's width. I measured side to side, not up and down, to get a true measurement.
But when you bought new wheels why then did you not get 16"ers?
Basically, I went to the Airsteeam dealer and looked at the new trailers. I liked the size, and the proportions of the wheels/tires in relation to the trailer size.
I believe that Marathons only very recently became available in a 16in size Either that or a 235/75/R15 size, which is wider and taller. The 235 might be very tight to get in and out of the wheel well.
Do Marathons not come in 16?
See above, but best call a Goodyear dealer.
Any second thoughts on switching to radial from the bias?
Well, I did make a lot of changes all at once, so it's hard to tell what actually made the biggest improvement. I got new axles with new brakes, a new brake controller, new tires, and a new tow truck. My first trip was sort of confusing, I could not tell what made which improvement. So on my next trip I used my old tow vehicle, and the trailer behaved just great. This took out the brake controller and the tow vehicle change. I feel that the ride is smoother, the trailer tracks straighter, less sway, less vibration and "tugging" at the hitch.
I do notice that the marathons are much stickier than the Carlisles. There is a definite increase in trailer creaking and popping in tight turns, and when maneuvering. I use a forklift to store my trailer in my warehouse, and there you can really tell. I think the Marathons are much softer than the Carlisles were. But to sum it all up, the perceived differences were very subtle. No dramatic improvements anyplace, other than visual. Oh, one thing changed a lot, that is the trailer contents remain in place now, where before things got tossed about violently.....
S&V
OH what did you get for your old wheel tires if I may ask?
I still have them, most people did what i did, and had the old wheels restored.
And did you ever post the pic of hub caps?
The hub caps are toast. Can't be salvaged at a reasonable price, too pitted.
And do you know the wheel lug (stud) spacing on the wheels? i.e. 6x5in. or 5x4.75in. etc.?
I do not know the wheel lug spacing.
