Ok, Now you have me dreaming about ours again. It got put on hold last fall when I had some heath issues. Then we got the bright idea we wanted to move and needed to work on the house to get it ready for market. So I'm just finishing up a bath remodel and bed room redo including new ceramic tile floor, 120ft of base board, 50ft of window trim, 3 new doors, new bifolds for the closet. YEEE HAAA. With some luck I will have this wrapped up this weekend.
The Airstream has got some use. With the inside of the Airstream in my garage I needed a place to paint the trim. a 22ft empty airstream makes a nice shady place to paint.
Next weekend I work on this leak we can't seem to find. Once I can get it dry inside then I can strip the babyblue paint and go back to white.

Like, wow, Vern, I am afraid to even start writing my list!
We are now focused on building a shed to protect the A/S's delicate top from falling limbs in our tree-ful yard. For a reason neither of us is willing to admit, this shed is about 40 ft long. Neither of us admits the possibility of desire for a SECOND A/S, certainly not the teeny little '49 that I still haven't positively ID'd, no - no - not THAT one! Yet we are making this shed 40 ft long to house our little Trade Wind.
I want to know from one of you, Vern, Aaron, somebody on this thread:
How do you work on the top? One of the features of our shed is rafters on which we will be able to lie and reach stuff on the roof. Right now we have a leak in the roof exhaust fan and our temporary fix is a tarp. How DO you work on the roof without some structure to support yourself? I assume that I can't rest a ladder on it and lean on it, I assume I will warp it.
??
And Vern, that is a GREAT paint job!
Connie

Quick question: what water pump did you buy for the GT? I need a new one for our '66 Safari. Also curious what led you to choose the one you did. Thanks!

Connie,
when we start to work on roof projects, I intend to use the scaffold we bought for a house porch project last year. It's an adjustable 5' or 6' long scaffold from Bil-Jax, that you can raise from 4" to 5' in 2" increments. Really handy and come with wheels that lock. The whole unit runs about $300 and you can get extra sections. Amazon sells it, but you may have a local ladder supply.
You have the same idea that I have. We will use the rafters. I am still wondering if it takes as much time/money as you and I are spending? or is there some other way to access the roof?
Connie

We already had the scaffold, and let me tell you, once we started using it, we couldn't imagine getting by without it. For working or painting ceilings, working high up, or any job where you need to be off of the ground, but have a range of motion, it's awesome. You don't have to reposition it as often as a ladder, you can just walk side to side, and you stand on the platform, not a rung.
Quick question: what water pump did you buy for the GT? I need a new one for our '66 Safari. Also curious what led you to choose the one you did. Thanks!

AYSTRM2,
The PO had purchased a SHURflo water pump, and he just never got around to installing it.
So, that's what I plan to install after I check the system out first...
(This was found inside of a cabinet.)
I haven't done any research yet to determine if it's the right one for the job.
My thoughts are:
Since it's free, and the same brand as the one in my 84 A/S, I'm willing to give it a try. Connie,
Thanks for the nice remarks concerning the outcome of the painting efforts.
I took special care took keep the paint from running, and at the same time, seamless in appearance~
Thanks again~

This is one project I'm not looking forward to.
The PO really did a temporary job on this~`
I will first attempt to do this from the inside but, feel the urge to get up on top just to make sure he didn't lay any minefields for me..
You ever have those day>???
These are the new 'vent operators' we picked up from Inlandrv..
Nice~!!
I have just one original operator, if anyone has a need for..Pm me~!

Original Saniware toilet question~
In looking in the rear end compartment of the 64GT, I discovered the Saniware toilet has a 12V motor mated to the rear of the toilet bowl..
Does anyone have a clue as to just what this used for? It was just sitting there lose in the opening of the cover that it feed thru..Appears to be in good working condition except for the rust on the enclosure cover~
I've enclosed some pictures to make it easier to see..
Thanks again for any help~!
I know..when all else fails, just pull the #*%!~ handle..lmao

What is under the cover that the drive gear goes into? Could it be a early version of the current electronic toilet. Having a system where you push the lever and it added water and flushed so you don't have to stand there??
On a marine head they have a built in macerator, I don't think that is what this is, but I am just guessing.

just a thought, but my '73 has an exhaust fan "down there", along the side of the toilet. there's flexible ducting that goes down through the closet and out the rear curbside corner, like where an exhaust pipe would be.
Chuck,
That sounds like a nice feature to have.
I don't think this contraption was meant to do that`! lol
Worked on the new Astrodome installation project until the threat of rain forced a retreat.
Here's a few pictures on "What Not to use for this type of repair~
"That's half of an old Samsonite suitcase, and a piece of plywood for a cover." Grrrr
The new Astrodome in place, and looking good~!~
I can see the smile getting bigger every day on the front of the 64GT

Boy Vern, are you trying to confuse everyone here or what?!
Your name is 53 Flying Cloud, your avatar sports a '84 Sovereign, and your working on a 64 Globetrotter!!
Hey are you saving your receipts? Be interesting to know what the final $$ will be when your done.
Looking good!
Tim,
What else can I do for fun? lol
Yeppers, I'm saving everything except for the junk~That's free..
So far the new lights were only $14.96, not counting the new 12v sockets and bulbs..Another $22 there.
The Astrodome was around $200, including shipping.
The new vent operators were $58 each..(more for shipping.)
The new couch was $100, plus several more for gas, tolls, motel room.($300 total for the trip)
I have other bills pending or stashed away.lol
Like for the new window screens being made, and the new Lexan windows yet to be picked up.
Paint supplies, etc about $45
All in all, not too bad yet.
New axle, wheels, tires, shocks are to come next..
Now that's gonna hit the ole silk purse hard.!@!
The new curtains materials cost was $40 plus, the wife said $11 per hour to make em for me...lmao
Thanks again~

Today was the hottest day yet..(93 degrees)
We pushed on with the Astrodome project~
I spend the better part of the morning, with my upper body poked thru the top opening, cleaning all of the black gook off the vent area plus some red paint!!
Started to drill the holes after-wards, and the drill wasn't up to stuff..(battery powered)
Called my neighbor down the street, ended up I borrowed his..
Okay, now we're back on the job doing the drilling when I discovered the drills were the wrong kind.~
That's okay.I needed to run over to Home Depot to pick up some #6-32 stainless steel hardware, and some new gasket for the vent.
While out, I figured I'd wash the Burb..
$27.87 later, we finally finis the drilling, fastening down the hardware.
Installed the new Astrodome in place..It looks good~!!
Took it back off to finis the gasket work, and applied Vulkum over the nuts to seal it against water~
Here's a few pictures of the job.

Looks great - yow - 58 dollars for the vent operators - I can see why though, look like they are very nicely made.
What kind of gasket did you use.
Sure enjoying this post - I've got the same things to do on my 58 - belly comes off tomorrow!

Ken,
That's 58$ each...lol
Thanks for the nice compliments`
That sounds like some serious work you have in store..
The gasket is fairly generic, but was the largest size they had at Home Depot, 3/4"x7/16"x10 ft.Part number R734W
The stainless steel hardware is #6X32 with the nuts /washers combination~I'd liked to have had something just abit larger but...This will do for now.

Those are really nice looking fixtures. Where did you find them?
FF
flyfshr,
I'm glad you like them..
I picked these up at Home Depot..(14.96$ each)
Acouple of things to be aware of..
They're wired for 120V originally, I just converted them to 12V.
The 12V socket cost less than 3$ each.
The 12v Bulbs were just under 5$ each.
These are the 50W bulbs..My thinking now is, I'd rather see 35W instead.
I would've like to have kept the original lights, but the fixtures were in such poor conditions..No new replacements available. (That I was aware of..)
With the new paint job, and the special effects the light cast..it's kewl~
Again, thanks for taking the time to look at the pictures..
ciao

Those are really sharp looking light fixtures! Resembling the original look - but even better than the original! Like the way the light highlghts the wood and new paint job ,too.
I thing HD is going to have a mysterious run on those fixtures.....
Keep up the great work-
And for Pete's sake stay cool- stop for frequent cool beverage breaks, visits to the pool, if you have one, etc.

upallnight & all..
No, they didn't carry the sockets. I ended up going to a local electrical supplier here in Milford, NH. They cost, like 2.67$ each, already wired to go~!
If you or anyone else would like further info..PM me and, I can arrange for connection to the source. (it took less than 5 min to convert, btw.)
The bulbs were purchase at Home Depot. (in a package of three..)
Barb,
Thanks for the 'vote of approval'...
Yes, Yes..I agree, it's much too hot to stay inside without a break.`
This is when I walk around the corner to wander thru my garden..
To smell the flowers~What a grand time of the year it is~!!
I've discovered I'm host to such things as "Hummingbird Moth", "Snow Crab Spiders" among other~
Yesterday, I walked a local flooring company rep.thru the 64GT, getting ready for the cork flooring to go in..
He came by to give us an estimate for the work..The sample look fantastic~!
Just another fabulous day in NH~!~

Fox gloves love poor soil and hate to be fussed over, that's why they are successful wildflowers... Are the roses native? They're beautiful!
Word of warning - the "Humming bird Moth" is the adult metamorphasis of the dreaded horn worm. The bain of all tomato gardeners, a couple of them can demolish a 3' tomato plant in 2 days! But I agree they are fun to watch!
Hey Vern!
You sure know how to keep threads going!
What are you trying to do? Out thread the 'Finally got started'? ;-) !!
Safari Tim,
That could never, ever happen again...you reckon?? lmao
Don,
Man...that's one nice view~!!
I love the water back-drop~
Barb,
You know more about the soil thingie than I ever dreamed of...
Thanks for the tip..
Yep, I kinda knew that about the Hummingbird Moth, but I still lov em~
The only know native "rose" to North America is, the Cherokee Rose, to my knowledge.. The example shown are just your average garden rose..
I was surprised they came back so well. I had cut them back completely last Fall..
Progress report~
Got back the cost and scheduled for the cork flooring..Looking for it to be installed in 2 weeks time..We'll see...

So Vern, what type of roses are they? They look like William Baffins. And are your Trumpet vines in bloom already?
I honestly could not say if they're WB or not..(I'll be the first to tell you..my 'green thumb' is more luck than anything else..lol)
The Trumpet (?) are in bloom..
Funny thing is, when I first bought them, I thought they were both Honeysuckles..
It turns out they're slightly different, in both color and scent.(One has a nice fragance, and the other one has nothing~) On my Red Wood Arbor, there's the more traditional Honeysuckle vine with deep smelling fragrance~
Somewhat similar to the Mock Oranges...
I just wished my Wisteria would bloom more often~!!

Today, I picked up the new screens for the 64GT,
and they're a perfect fit~! I might add, they look nice ~
(Now, Looking forward to adding the custom made curtains next week~!!)While I was out picking up the screens, I grabbed some SS screws for the bathroom fixtures.
The towel rack, soap dish, and shower wand are re-installed using SS screws~No more ugly looking, rusty screws~
Cost breakdown..
New screens, 54$
8 SS screws, 1.20$
Total cost: 55.20$

First, I wanted to thank those that had offered to assist me in my search for some new window operators`
The search is over~!
A few days back while reading another "thread" on here, it was mention about finding things in your local hardware store..Got me thinking about my ole favorite before WalWorld-era.
Yesterday while shopping for some SS hardware, I just happened to be looking up and, noticed a box marked "Mobile Window Operators".
I thought, maybe I'll take a quick look see as to what this is..You know?
Well, you could've knocked me over..Here was a whole box FULL of W/O like those used in my 64GT..Not only did it have the right hand side operators but, left hand ones as well~!
Here's the best part~!!
My cost, as marked, 5.40$ each~
I picked up 4 of em~!
Then, afterwards, I was just about to give up (this was after driving to 5 or 6 stores) on finding some new 1" curtain slip on hooks.
Today, while I was searching the internet, I came across just what I need~!
14 to a bag for about 1.19$ per bag. I need about a 100 or so of these thingie~
Just another great day here in NH~!

Sooo, any chance you'd part with a control knob from one of your discarded lights?! I've lost one somewhere along the way.
Shocks are next on my list. I'll let you know how hard/easy the replacement goes. We plan to try to DIY and if that fails pull her into the local auto repair shop.

Looking for the Model number for Magic Chef, 4 burner stove ..
Ours is #720 W
There should be a plate in the far left hand corner under the burner cover. I believe there are different numbers based on whether it has a window (ours does) in the oven or not.
A couple of weeks ago we bought a duplicate oven for parts (no window Model 720 T) at a AS rally swap meet/auction. We just took both apart last weekend and rebuilt the whole thing from the best of each oven/stove. Also stripped & repainted the top under the burners as it was a bit rusted, cleaned and adjusted everything.
Below are the following:
1) Label from stove with window...number very difficult to read in picture
2) Label from stove w/o window
3) Our stove before rebuild
4) Newly painted top
5) Re-installed...except for the burner cover...you can see the label in top left corner
Hope this helps!
Shari

Shari,
Thanks~!!
That's exactly the info I was looking for.
Nice looking work on yours~!
I also have the window door model, which is brown.
Mine has the same rusty area, water perhaps from the window, or "busy kitchen helper"?? lol
On mine, the label was totally unreadable, except for the the number '20'. The first part of it looked like a 'T'..Must've been the '7'..
Would you mind sharing a few pointers on how you took your stove out of the cabinet? From what I seen, there's four screws just under the top cover along the sides..Those have to come out, right? Are there any more that I need to look for? The gas line, I haven't yet seen where or how it''s disconnected..Anything else would be a great help as I'd like to retain this stove in as original config as possible.
I wonder just how many years Airstream used this model?
As it's so very similar to the stove in my 84 Sovereign.
(It, and all my books are down in Va. )
Again, thanks for the help`

There are 6 total screws to get the stove out...the 4 you mention at the top plus two more (one on each side) inside the front door frame. To disconnect the gas, the connection on the left, right beyond the horizontal bar holding the burners is the only place that needs to be undone. Be sure you gas tanks are turn off first.
We had the luxury of having a second stove sitting side by side to try things out on or see how they went together so I didn't take a bunch of pictures, but basically it's pretty simple. I just stripped everything down, clean it, stripped, sanded, primed & painted the top and used chrome polish to remove the rust from the chromed portions. I also painted the gas line part black. then put it all back together. Our oven thermostat was not working so we used the 'new' stove's which works, but needs to be adjusted (200=350) otherwise we'll buy a new one someday (+/-$160).
Below is the donor stove, which was in worse shape than ours.
Shari

I'd never found, nor thought about, the two inside screws`
Does sound simple..
Good advice about the gas..I suspect I'll end up replacing the gas line in time.
BTW, if you don;t need two of the knobs..I'd like to talk with you about buying them..And, anything else that you feel you might part with..trim, etc
As you can see, your donor stove is in better shape~ lol
You certainly did a great restoration job on your's~
On an entirely different subject.
I'm getting the "stuff" together to re-do the windows.
All in all, this has been quite a process to try and bring some life back to this baby..But, then you know that~
Did someone once say they built these things in a day?? lol
