What cleaning product to use depends on how dirty or stickey the walls are.
A good starting product is Spic and Span, along with "elbow grease."
Two coats of "Future Floor Wax" does a super job.

Sticky

I agree, full strenght simple green works very well ona lot of stuff, but be careful, guys. i sprayed it on my polished alloys on my van ( very stupid of me) and it took of the shine like it was a contest.
I can only imagine what it would do to a polished airstream, or other polished aluminum surfaces, if spilled or applied by accident. Tha same goes for Castrol Super Clean, by the way.

I've tried cleaning my sticky walls with a few different products (not those listed here). Before I try again, has anyone been successful at removing the stickiness from their walls?

Sticky Stuff

Craig,
I think the stickyness is a result of the covering material on the inside aluminum oxidizing, or reacting to ozone or whatever. It feels like it is a part of the way this material becomes over time. My approach will be to clean it very well first, then apply a suitable sealer to bind it, instead of trying to remove it.
I tried a few spots inside the closet, and it felt solid, not sticky for a short while, but then it came back to it's sticky self after a few weeks.
Inlandandy recommends future floor wax to fix the problem after cleaning. I will try this soon and post my results.

I have the vinyl clad aluminum interior on my Minuet. I tried everything except brake cleaner. and was growing very frustrated. All the stuff mentioned earlier was very weak.

Finally my wife brought out some spot remover from Amway. It worked so well that it is probably a trade secret. Cuts through that sticky stuff, and it will not come back (you know what I mean)

The amount needed is very small. Make sure you have lots of ventilation. It is too cold here now to finish the job, but it really works. It is in the trailer now, if you want the details let me know.

I've used simple green with great results. I think the stickyness comes from cooking and general living in the trailer. The PO of my trailer used it a lot at the various rallies. I think she used the oven everyday! It had so much buildup inside of it that I think it was a cubic foot smaller!

Mix the simple green in a bucket and use a firm sponge to wipe away the grime. Did mine over a year ago, and the interior is still smooth.

Good Luck.

I tried Spic & Span and then Ammonia with no results. Finally wiped it off with denatured alcohol.
I also believe its cooking grease etc.

I used an concentrated industrial cleaner called ZAP that my wife came up with. I think that it is citrus bases. It took a couple of applications and thus far I have not had the reappearance of the stickies.

Interior wall cleaning

Care must be taken to "not" use any plastic solvent when cleaning the interior "vinylclad. "
To do so,can dissolve the vinyl, making a horrible mess. Or in the case of some other solvents, the vinyl can become hardened and brittle, which will result in cracks appearing, in time.
Industrial cleaning solvents are the best to use. Depending on how sticky the walls have become, there are several different products that work well.
We suggest, that after you went through the long hard work of cleaning the vinyl, apply a couple of coats of "Future floor acrylic."

The end result, will knock your socks off, and leave your shoes still on your feet.

To see what that will look like, go to our web site,

http://www.inlandrv.com

Click on articles, and then click on "How to have a new interior for $5.00."

Future Floor acrylic

I'm on my way to buy Future Floor acrylic for my 68 overlander's vinyl walls...
but I can't help but ask if "Armourall" is at all useful on AS vinyl surfaces?
I think I should use it it on window seals....gaskets....
ya can't beat Future for a cheap solution!
Thanks!

Martha,

Any vinyl/rubber protectant is a good idea for an Airstream. A liberal application every six months will go a long way to protecting your trailers rubber and vinyl components!

Interesting thread!

We have the sticky wall syndome and were baffled by it. Do any other owners paint the walls? Once you put the Future on would it then be impossible to paint later because of the wax?

Vinyl wll protection.

Vinyl wall/rubber protectant is a temporary fix. Future floor acrylic is permanent.
It can be removed simply by using warm soapy water with ammonia.
Why would someone take off the Future floor acrylic and want to paint the walls?
Sticky walls can be cleaned. Not easy, but they can be cleaned. Then the acrylic is applied, usually 2 coats.
Painting vinyl material is not as easy as it sounds. First, the sticky must be removed. Secondly, the vinyl must be sanded, very well, with 120 grit sandpaper.
Then and only then, can the vinyl be painted, using the correct type of paints.
If the vinyl material is not sanded, the paint will peel in just a few months. Likewise, if the wrong paints are used.

They can be cleaned, and easily at that.

The walls inside our 1971 were excellent fly paper. I bet they had never been cleaned.
We cleaned them in just a few minutes with the most amazing grease dissolver:

Super Clean from Castrol.

Is it safe for vinyl? you ask or how we discovered Super Clean:

We had bought a used 20'X20' vinyl tent. It was coated with every type of dirt, and a lot of tree sap. For months we tried suggestions from friends and strangers. From Simple Green to Fantastick, to industrial stuff we never heard about before. With a lot of work, we cleaned about 1 square foot.

Then, frustrated, I made a last attempt and without any testing, I just spilled some Super Clean on it. Mike nearly had a heart attack: it looked like the vinyl had melted. It changed from a dirty brown to the original white and yellow in a flash.

About $5 or $6 a gallon at WalMart. For general household cleaning, reduce it by 16/1.
It should not be left to sit too long on glass or aluminium. Just rince it off, we never had any damage. This is the only cleaner we use. (wear gloves: I didn't. No problems the first times, then it soaks the grease out of our skin !!!)

castrol super clean is the stuff!

thanks to femuse!

i got some superclean. working on my second airstream, 72 tradewind.

fmy partner loralee tried washing is diluted about 4 parts water one part super clean.

looked pretty good. then, i tried spraying it on full strength. in moments the droplets of cleaner had turned muddy brown. let it sit for a minute or two and wiped it off with a wet rag and clean water.

unbelieveable. the vinyl walls looked brand new and the whole coloration of the inside went several shades lighter and less yellow. and no sticky whatsoever!

next the future. also, doing a custom rebuild from scratch of a 64 sovereign. what a project. stripped it to the alum bones. here are a few pics:
