Uh-hhmmm... if the "nylon over-braid" is no longer intact; are you saying the wires are bare? If so, that's problem #1. Especially if you intend to use a metal screen door spring.

We tow with an LR3. Have had no problems with the self-leveling air suspension but do not use WD setup.

The ONLY problem we have had is the LED tail lights on the (2007) AS blink when connected...

We have a 19' Bambi (4500#) and I pull it with a 2004 Land Rover Discovery easily. You might look that direction whether you stay with the 16' or go 19'. And a great ride for CO to boot.

So few miles, I'd leave the (GYM) spare on the ground, get the "new" spare you want, then eventually replace the 4 on the ground with what you want.
