Overview My1955 Airstream Flying Cloud Whale's Tail. A shell barn find in Souther California. The interior cabinets and furniture were too deteriorated to salvage (but the fridge and stove look great in my office!). So I had Airstream artist and woodworking virtuoso Mike McFadden in Ventura Beach, CA customize the interior.

Exterior is unmodified except for the 13KBTU Dometic AC, King OmniPro HDTV antenna (wired for TVs front and rear), polished aluminum tanks, two Fan-Tastic fans, original size radial light truck tires customized with 2-inch whitewalls, new window gaskets all around, ZipDee awning with vintage color scheme strips and matching chairs, and polished exterior, of course.

Using solid walnut frames and teak veneer panels, the interior cabinetry and furniture give the feel of a classic yacht. Except for the polished end caps, the ceiling is padded marine vinyl trimmed with an LED-lined walnut beam down the center that doubles as an air-conditioning duct, and the cabinet hardware is seaworthy polished nickel. I more recently built the front mounted stereo cabinet that has an instrument cluster showing time, DC Voltage, fresh water level, max/min thermometer, and water pump ON/OFF. Modern appliances, glassed-in bar with mirrored back, L-shaped sofa/dining area. Of course the sofa converts to a 2nd double bed. The 9 windows have light-filtering forrest green cellular shades except for the rear bed window that is black-out lined for daytime naps. The galley has a 3-burner gas stove and oven, plus builtin microwave and Dometic 3-way fridge. Separating the galley and opulent stateroom is a paneled pocket door with round porthole window of translucent stained glass, which slides open to reveal an enclosed sink and toilet room across the hallway from the shower, and a large double bed in the rear. For the five years since it's been finished, EVERYONES reaction when they first walk in is, "WOW" (even at the Pismo Beach Rally). 13KBTU Dometic AC, Suburban gas furnace and water heater. two huge deep cycle batteries with 80A 12VDC charger/converter, Three tanks: Fresh, Gray, and Black.
