TRIM? not sure what its called???

It seems most of the "trim" other than the ends of it, is missing from my baby. It looks like it is supposed to rivet or somehow attach onto the inner trim piece. Where can I find replacement trim or what do others do when this is missing?

I got mine at Inland RV Center - The Nations Leading Expert in Airstream Innovations

My trailer uses two sizes. I bought 2 rolls of each size.

These are vinyl inserts that slide into the channels and are held by the end caps that rivet on. They come in rolls by the foot. Look in Exterior Trim at inlandrv.com or in Airstream Special at Out-Of-Doors Mart (odmrv.com).

There is a MUCH cheaper alternative to the scarce on-line distributors. Rustoleum paint has a color that matches perdy good. True, you have to actually paint it on the camper and that takes time. But it's much cheaper and looks better (IMHO).

Did I mention you can save money with this route?

The color is Royal Blue.

Thanks Terry. I forgot the color. I'm basically "cheap". Anytime I can save several hundred dollars, that's the path for me.

I used black trim :-)

girlscan2 09-25-2012 08:39 PM

I have another question about the trim. Does the blue color go the whole width of the inset (as in one ribbon? Or is it thin and just within the rail (as in 2 small ribbons?)

The vinyl insert is one piece and rests within the metal molding.

It is two smaller inserts.

girlscan2 09-25-2012 09:24 PM

Thanks, I thought it was the smaller two ribbons but I saw one today that had a wider blue strip.

Dan and Liz 09-26-2012 10:12 AM

It is one insert in the channel like Andy said. Look at the end piece by the International sign where the paint is(n't).

If I do this right, this is a photo of a '74 with all three inserts installed:

Thanks for posting this. I am a visual person and it's nice to see what it's supposed to be like. Is yours paint or the actual strips?

How durable is the plastic trim.... if its like the original, and hardens/shrinks and falls out, then its better to paint it!

Alumaholic 10-03-2012 06:30 PM

Please Don't Paint it

... Purchase two rolls of the vinyl insert material from Inland RV. It will take fewer than two hours to replace the trim on your entire Airstream, and you will be pleased with the results. It will last 15-20 years.

I've got the wide stuff around the bottom of my '78, and the longest piece shrunk about 6" in five years.

As someone who's painted their railings, by the time you get done taping everything up and then cleaning any over spray off, you've easily got two hours into it.

Although I really like the way it came out, I could dig either dark navy blue or black vinyl trim as well.

Keyair 10-03-2012 08:30 PM

Maybe I missed it...
How much is the plastic trim... $ per foot?

Splitrock 10-03-2012 08:43 PM

Mine came in 50' rolls. Took 4 rolls. Cost about $170 total.
