This may be a stupid question, but ... here goes. Are Airstreams stolen very often? Anyone have stats?

Great question! I'd also be interested to know which is stolen more often--older or newer trailers? Maybe the idea of a lock is just an overreaction to a threat that is minimal?

:) Hi, I wouldn't be without a coupler lock on my trailer. I use a Guardian G-37. Seems from what I have read here on this forum that older trailers usually in storage lots or on large properties have been stolen. Also seems that most were in Washington or Texas. Also a few were reported as stolen off of dealer's lots. [brand new] This is just from what I remember right now.

We used to use the Guardian G-37 which I think is one of the better lock designs available, but have recently gone to using the MegaHitch vault. As a non-thief, I think the MegaHitch would be a bit harder to overcome.

As noted above, Clearwater Industries (the MegaHitch manufacturer) does offer great customer service. They called a couple months after I purchased the lock to make sure it was working fine for me, at which time I asked to see if I could get more keys for mine as I somehow lost one of my keyrings. They looked it up and the keys were in the mail that day.

I've also ordered one for my parents' new teardrop. That thing seems to attract even more campground attention than an Airstream. :)

Here in Hinckley, Ohio three or four trailer were stolen in the last month. They weren't Airstreams but non the less stolen trailers.

An Airstream can be placed anywere, a back lot, a permanent campground and used. It dosn't need to have a plate or be registared. A fellow on Craigs list is advertising for the return of his Airstream stolen from a campground locally.

When was the last time you were stopped and they checked the trailer registration and plates?

You see older trailer advertised for sale cheap and when you inquire, they have no title. IE stolen years prior. Sometimes an owner missplaces it though or dies.

Airstreams are very expensive and will be stolen.

Are they stolen? About 4 or 5 from Texas last year alone.

Mega Hitch is the best in my opinion, and after watching the video of them blowing the competition's locks away (breaking into them or breaking them off).

Good point! :D

Hi, all. I know this thread is a few months old, but I'm in the market for a hitch lock, hoping you can help me make the right choice. Several of you have mentioned the megahitch coupler vault. I checked out the website, which one is appropriate for my 1950's Airstream? The 1 7/8 or 2" model, or do I get the silver 'Airstream' model? For those who have purchased this lock, are you still happy with it? Thanks!

AWCHIEF 02-10-2013 09:40 PM

Sum, what size hitch ball do you have?

Sum75 02-10-2013 11:25 PM

I'm pretty sure it's a 2"

Sum75 02-10-2013 11:27 PM

...but I do like the looks of the 'Airstream' model (hey, it's silver after all). Or is yellow a better deterrent?

AWCHIEF 02-11-2013 08:49 AM

The 2 inch is what you need. My lock is yellow, I really don't know if that color is a deterrant or not. Do keep in mind that a lock no matter what kind will not stop a professional. Hopefully they will at least make some lazy scum bag go for an easier target.

Sum75 02-11-2013 12:36 PM

Thanks, AWCHIEF. That's what I'm hoping, that the lock will give potential thieves pause. It sure seems like it would be a lot of work to remove- definitely not quick or easy!

After reading about these locks I bought this one:

All the lock does is slow the thief down a bit but a lock with a visible bar or loop is the quickest to cut off.

Yep, that's the one I ended up getting too.

That one is the Masterlock 379 DAT, right? The price is hard to beat ($19.25 on Amazon tonight). Maybe I should start with that one then upgrade to the other one later. I just don't want to take any chances.

Sum75 02-11-2013 09:17 PM

To Sylvr Slypr... Well at least you got your check back! That's crazy, the website is still up & running. I hope you find something better.

My envelope was inside the marked one and it had the correct return address for Guardian. I think I will give them a call to get to the bottom of this.
