Changing placement of holding tanks?
My 1960 18' Traveler had one of those galvanized pressurized fresh water tanks in the very front. The fill spout is on the front of the trailer. I took out the heavy, nasty galvanized tank and was wanting to put the new tank under the bed (curbside) at the back of the trailer, just behind the wheel well. In addition, I want to add a grey water tank in the little closet on the other side of the trailer (streetside). The black tank is also going to be on the streetside just toward the rear from the grey tank. Since it is a small trailer, we're not talking huge tanks. The space available for my black tank is: 6" high, x 32" long x 22" wide. The grey tank space would be 10 1/2" wide by 19" long x up to 30" high. The fresh tank can be up to 28" wide x 36" long x 11" high. Another thing is whether or not I can actually find tanks these sizes.
Any words would wisdom would be greatly appreciated.
The black tank is conventionally mounted directly under the toilet, which usually means under the floor in the frame.
Don’t forget the plumber’s rule number one.
S*!t don’t run up hill.
People have mounted the black tank on top of the floor directly under the toilet. It makes for a taller toilet, but if you're already tall, you might prefer that. The black tank needs to be mounted directly under the toilet for ease of toilet emptying, because it has a weak flush, basically drops into the tank underneath it. You couldn't have a pipe run to the black tank like you do in the house - it would plug too easily. Hope this helps. There are many configurations of tanks on the market and places that will make you a custom size and configuration if you're willing to pay for it. We're contemplating making our own tanks with plastic sheets we can buy locally and a plastic welding kit available at Harbor Freight. That'll be a this winter project and we'll post the results!
