Repairing vs. shortening awning rail

I've removed my old Carefree Fiesta awning from our '74 Sovereign and sent the re-usable canvas to the shop to be refitted as a "vintage style" awning. I'm having it shortened to a more manageable length as it was 21', and having some grommets placed along the outer edge to accommodate telescoping poles and ropes.

Now the question:

The awning rail is in bad shape near the ends. About 6-12" of it at each terminus is pulled up from the trailer and inch or so, and "boogered up". Should I attempt to reattach the rail to the trailer, or should I cut off the worst part and just live with a slightly shortened awning rail?

Stephen

P.S. See the classified section for my old awning hardware and bits.

As long as the awning rail itself is still serviceable, you can reattach it using several Olympic rivets and some Vulkem sealer.

Don't rely on just one or two rivets at the end of the rail.
