How durable is a Cyclo polisher? What about a rivet shaver?

Has anyone polished a Cyclo to death? If so, what broke first? How long did it last? Are there any weaknesses that should prevent me from sharing one with friends?

What about a rivet shaver? How many rivets can it shave? Can it be re-sharpened? Is it's lifecycle 1,000 rivets or 100,000 rivets? Can it break easily? Is it safe to share with my friends?

Replacement bits can be had from $18 to $20 buck. You would have to shave a lot of alumnum rivet heads to dull a carbide shaver bit.

Now if you owned this shaver, I would like to borrow it from you for say a couple of 10 years.

And, its on Sale!! Come on, you now you want it.

Is it pneumatic...

Or how does it run?

BobbyW 06-07-2002 01:13 AM

Yes, its Pneumatic. My nephew is an Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic (A&P)and he swears by it. Very precise but, over-kill for our purposes.

I shaved close to 1500 rivets with my shaver and it seems as effective as day 1.

OK, what about the Cyclo? How long and durable is it?

I need to find out if a Cyclo is good for polishing 2 small trailers, 2 large 31' trailers of many many trailers. What parts are the first to break? Are replacement parts available?

I want to buy a Cyclo and share it with many friends, loan it to them for a month then to the next one, etc.

Am I crazy, or are these polishers tough and durable?

Thanks,

Andy

Andy,
I agree. I have posted somewhere else we do this. But as you say... "How long can we expect them to last?" Is an issue that must be dealt with. I will gladly ante' up my portion in the pot to purchase. If not, I may just buy my own in the future. But being I live in south Georgia, I am not going to do any polishing until winter. I would die in the heat and sun here right now...

Andy, the life of the polisher depends on how well you keep it clean plus, since this has been around (design-wise) for more years than you or I wanta count..It's very SAFE to assume that parts will never be a problem~! The breakdown diagrams/parts list shows it to be an easy fix~
Mine has well over 200 hours of polishing time on it and, it still looks and works perfectly~

I first polished mine 2 years ago. I am now polishing again (easier this time). My Cyclo still looks like new. It's my Dewalt side compounder that is beginning to sound a bit rough.

Rivet Shaver Tool - from Aircraft Tool Supply. Works great - a bit pricey. Can't imagine it will dull on aluminum rivets.

Yes they are

We paid around two-fifty for our cyclo. Often times they are re-built and re-sold and work just right. The two heads rotate in two directions at once. Al the company makes sure that you do is to keep a few drops of oil in it. They are great for the larger areas but there are places they cannot reach (tight spots) and you have to either use a drimmel rigged up for polishing and they will work too. Just remember that polishing is LABOR Intensive- and you might get a case of tennis elbow (like I have right now...) lol
