Airstreamer Wannabe Question
Newbie here. We're looking at an Airstream we can just barely afford [it would be our first one] that looks good to us but has no Air Conditioning. (1972 29' Ambassador)

How difficult is it to install your own? How much would you save? I see one poster here using a scaffold and it makes me think it's a job for a dealer, not a newbie...problem is, it might make this one we're looking at too expensive for us.

Any words of wisdom? It looks like there's a wealth of knowledge here!

Unless you are really handy, installing AC on an Airstream that has never had AC, would be a pretty tough job. Check out the price of buying a unit vs having one installed. Shop around, you may be able to find an acceptable price. You may also consider getting a small 110 volt household AC unit and put it in the rear window hole. This would also work, but also require some pretty tricky work.

On the other hand, I've been using my trailer all spring and summer in Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin, and only once turned on the A/C, just to see if it worked o.k. If you were in Fla. or SoCal, you'd definitely need it, but up here, it's not a killer most of the time. In April and such, though, I have run the furnace - you know, it gets cool in the evenings "up north"! But it looks to me as if a DIY A/C install would be tough, unless you had the right tools and perhaps scaffolding - and an experienced hand to point out where / what / when.

I was inquiring earlier this year for an ac for mine, the price for the unit was between 550 and 750 dollars depending on whether i wanted it to drain off outside or with the original drain tube inside. Did the trailer have one before? If it had the wiring already there for it, it should't be too teribly hard to diy. I figure the hardest part will be cutting the 14 inch square hole to mount it to. The unit prices I got was from an AS dealer in Florida.

What's that saying I've seen here on the forums? "If you need air conditioning, then you've gone too far south."

AC we don't need no stinking AC in SoCal. At least not while camping at the San Diego beaches. It's soooo much fun.

We got a dog and a 2 year old--guess we're looking at a professional install.

Thanks again,
