Western MD to Colorado Springs in October

We are planning a business trip from Western Maryland to Colorado Springs and then on to Aspen in our 2018 AI. We plan to leave Western Maryland on 10/5 and need to be in The Springs on the 9th. Spend a day in The Springs finally arriving in Aspen on the 11th. We prefer to avoid the interstates when possible and plan to stop before dark. We usually stay in State Parks. We are thinking of taking I-70 to Indianapolis and then taking Route 36 west - finally reconnecting to I-70 east of Limon. Any suggestions on campsites and road conditions would be appreciated. Thanks. Rick

I would leave some flexibility in your number of travel days as there may be a couple of "snow days" involved in the middle of October. Some of the passes can be dicey for people who aren't used to them - even without snow.

Unless there is a compelling reason to go north, I'd take I79 out of Morgantown, pick up I64 out of Charleston, and follow that all the way to St Louis. It used to be that no semis were allowed on I64 (verify this) which makes it a much more pleasant drive than I70. And Ohio roads are crap. You could go north from Louisville or slightly west if you want to pick up 36.
