Oro Valley (Tucson) to San Diego

We're staying in Oro Valley north of Tucson and will be traveling to San Diego. It is a good 450 miles between the two. Kind of too much for one day. We'd like to break up the trip. Is there any place to stop or anything to see between Oro Valley and San Diego? We have been to Organ Pipe Cactus National Park. Thanks for any suggestions.

I have used Paradise Casino (free) gravel lot in Yuma. Territorial Prison nearby is worth a look. Other than that, have also used Boulder Oaks CG near Pine Valley, CA for a quick overnight. But there are plenty of RV parks in Yuma if you want hookups and security.

Besides ample places in and arouind Yuma, consider Dateland, and have a Date Shake!

We left safari in Kentucky last week and flew to Mesa Az. Rented vehicle and rented park model in wellton Az.
Several R.V. parks in area of wellton Az off I -8 30 miles east of Yuma.
Miss the airstream but enjoying sunny 78 degree. Safe travels. Ron and Nancy

Here’s an idea that may or may not work for you. Go to Palm Springs. Then it’s only 2 hours or so to SD the next day. This allows you to drive to SD in the mid day and miss the dang awful rush hour traffic.

We've stopped several times at the Paradise Casino in Yuma and the Quechan Casino on the California side. Of the two, the Quechan is better IMO. Both used to be free but last time we stopped (at Quechan two years ago), there was a $10 charge good for three nights. We were told the same fee applied at the Paradise Casino. If you need fuel, make sure you fill up on the Arizona side.

Try using 78 to get to Anza Borrego California State Park- Beautiful and not too far from San Diego. If you have time, you might enjoy a day or two there checking out the big metal sculptures and some GREAT Mexican food.

Head west to Joshua Tree N P if its still open on Friday. Lots to see and do in park. Cottonwood Springs campground at southern end of park has large pull throughs, but its dry camping. Palm Springs nearby. My brother in law stayed at a great campground near Niland, CA near Thousand Palms and the Salton Sea called The Fountain of Youth Spa and RV Resort. Said hed definitely go back there.

We drive from Tucson to San Diego and LA a lot. Yuma is a great stop over and we have stayed there. We have also pushed on further, like wierdstuff suggests, then the next day is easy and you get there early, not tired, and you can get settled in and do some exploring. Don't forget Coronado Island, you really don't even need a car there, you can ferry over and walk approx 1 mile to the main drag. You will need to walk the one mile after stopping at Moo Time for ice cream anyway.:)
