AC unit

I am new to the R V world so I have a question. My overhead A/C united only seems to work via the generator and not when the R/V is hooked up to outside current. Am I doing something wrong. I have a 1988 345 Airstream motor home and still fingering out how things work. If any one knows the mechanics of these units then please help...Thanks... Lafayette...

Most Airstream motorhomes with two AC units and a 30 amp only grid power hook up cord were wired so the rear AC only operates on the generator. That is because two AC units on a 30 amp supply cord will overload it.

The only solution to running two at the same time is to either have a professional re wire the coach for a 50 amp supply system and cord, or, if clever, you can put in a transfer switch on the rear AC unit and feed it with a separate 20 amp, 120 volt power cord which plugs into the campground power system "normal" outlet. This would be in addition to the regular 30 amp cord you now have.

I have an A/C rated at 15,000 btu and it does not work (for long) plugged into my house plug (15 amp) but does work on my generator. When at an RV park with 30 amp service it works just fine.

Sounds like you need more power for the A/C than you are getting from your shore (outside) power. Hope that helps.

Do you have an automatic disconnect? It could be there is a problem with that transfer switch not flowing proper power.
