Ankornuta,

Talk to me, is it a steel plate or aluminum skin material. I have an L shaped piece of skin at the front about 4" on each leg.

Bill, I think it's aluminum. But the damndest thing is that I have a "battery holder" type steel contraption welded onto the A-frame part of the hitch which is preventing me from drilling those rivets out of it.

I would like to grind the battery holder deal off and rebuild it anyhow (although it is original), but I don't really want to grind it right NOW, while there's still all that wood and junk (like the body) to catch on fire while attached to the frame...

So what was the purpose of this plate?

There is a steel plate in the front which attaches the frame to the shell. Look to drilling the rivets from the inside. I didn't have anything in the way from drilling from the outside. If you are careful you may be able to grind off the rivets from the inside and punch them out. You must put this or a replacement back on.

Does it look like this?

Akornuta,

Does your aluminum piece look like the one in this picture? I think that that is what was used to help secure the front to the floor in addition to the channel before Airstream started using a steel plate welded to the frame cross member and riveted to the front shell. RJ Dial's 1957 Flying Cloud has the same thing.

Over59,

I do not have this steel plate on my 1954 Liner.

It's steel on my '58, afterall. And I had to drill it out from the backside (inside the trailer), but it wasn't too bad.

Akornuta,

Do you have seven or thirteen panels on the end?

Bill

Ankornuta,

Thanks, I am trying to tie down the appearance of the steel plate, it appears to have arrived with the seven panel end caps. This is RJ Dial's assumption as he does not have it on his 1957 Flying Cloud and I do not have it on my 1954 Double Door Liner.

Gotcha. I guess this plate was probably one of the first places that the body was attached to when putting the shell down on the floor.

One of the things I've been wondering about while taking the body off was if they built the body in place on the frame, or built it separately and then lowered it down onto the floor...

What we have here is the interior skin being put on and the tub being reinforced on the bottom and edges.

The plate was on my 1954 Cruiser. It is identical to Markdoane's.

Interior walls are polished aluminum. We will see how that works. Can always paint them if it doesn't work out.

Not making it to the Cherry Blossum this year..... But... the panels for the beds are in, ordered the foam, ordered the stove, and ordered the fridge. Ready to cut the Corian for the Bathroom and trim the tub which is otherwise done. I think we will be functional for Salisbury Beach at the end of April.
