Its kinda funny how that works - it seems like it takes forever to restore one of these - the list is endless of what needs to be done - then it seems like you wake up one day and its done! After 3 1/2 years I woke up and declared it done - I was really burned out and hardly wanted to lift a rivet, but time has gone on and there are now numerous projects I'm looking forward to doing on the Airstream

I have a loose time line of two years to complete this project. Im not sure when the clock will start, maybe it already has.

One thing that I know will make this project easier is that we have another trailer thats usable. We have a 2006 22'CCD that we spend a lot of time in during the summer. As we use one trailer we are talking about how to make the next one better.

I now realize what a job it is to rebuild an endcap. The more I look at it the more I see my imperfections. Oh well! Practice makes perfect and I still have the rear endcap to rebuild.

Reading all that everyone has to share here on the forums has given me the encouragement to tackle this project. I am amazed at the beautiful work that people are doing. This community is awesome and I look forward to being part of it for a long time to come.

And someday, some how, I will have a vintage trailer to enjoy myself.

Im off to the trailer for another day of work. Thank you everyone!

Yup - we had another trailer too - but being one who likes to see projects compleated, our summer camping got put off and the other trailer did not get used very much. I understand how we are self critical - your work is incredible - but in my case, I know every little inperfection and the first time I took it out, I kept looking in the mirror to make sure it was not all over the side of the road in pieces - after 3 years and 1000 miles or so, I made the big leap this past summer and did two 600+ mile trips with it - and its AMAZING - it still looked the same when I got home as when I started Everything is still attached! I'm going to plan some longer trips this summer - stay tuned and watch for aluminum and Airstream parts on the side of the road...

I see we may be cut from the same cloth Ken. It has taken me years to learn that it doesnt have to be done today. I still have a ways to go.

I brought this trailer home a year ago last week. I talked about it a lot and even dreamed and drew plans but I just couldnt start for some reason. Im glad I waited. Its only been the past three weeks that I have devoted so much time to the trailer. I hope to get the outside metal work done before The first of May, thats when my use of the shop ends and the trailer goes outside for the summer.

If you plan any long trips please post your route, Im always looking for good parts. Enjoy your day

Yeah - glad to hear you can make it this year Melody.....

Brad - what he is taking about is our restoration rally - you should come out and do a seminar on endcap restoration....

And yes I did the same thing, I had the trailer a while before I jumped into it - long story short it was supposed to be in better condition than it was, so it took me a while before I said to myself "I can do this" then many times I asked myself "so why am I doing this?" Looking back it was fun and gaag.... I've even thought about doing another one - and doing some little trick things I wished I had done on this one..

Ummm I think its the other way around - we would learn a lot from you - this is really some nice work....

When I saw your first pictures (I'm sure you did too) I thought ohhhhh man - but it has turned out great - I think you have also found that 50's trailers are very difficult to find and more and more if we want one, we going to have to do some major work.

I concur! With both statements. It's pretty hard to find a gorgeous 50's trailer, let alone one that's ready to camp, and even more rare: ready to camp right. A lot of the trailers I've looked at through ads and in person were "restored", but they really needed "re-restoring because they hadn't been fixed correctly.
So--- here's a toast! To all the good guys (& gals) who're going the real road to Resto!

Ill second that toast.

Its because of the open sharing of ideas and information here that I dared to try this. Its a challenge, that goes without saying, but it is worth it.If I look hard enough, or ask often enough I seem to find most of my answers right here.

Please keep sharing and Ill try to contribute my $0.02 worth from time to time.
Im doing this cause it will make for a really cool trailer and an amusing story over cocktails

Thanks

Very impressive. I had the same reaction as Ken when I first saw your trailer. But you are doing some incredible work. Keep it up.

I am totally looking forward to the door moving project. I've thought of doing it myself. I've read that the hinges were just flipped by the factory when the swing was changed. I'd love to see your floorplan idea's.

Great work on that endcap!!! Wow, for a first timer, huh?! It gives me the idea that I might be able to do an interior endcap for myself. Time will tell if I am brave enough!

Great posts! Keep em coming.

Thank you everyone!!

Hi Ed. Look at post #22 My floorplan is there.

As far as first time goes, there is more to the story. For many , many years I was a model train enthusiast. A lot of attention to detail and putting things together. I have been around the construction industry for 30 years. I spent 8 of those years as Purchasing manager for a custom trade show manufacturer. I had a 40 man shop in town I purchased for as well as a smaller shop in North Carolina. My last really good job was project managing custom starter castle builds. To sum it up I have always enjoyed putting things together.

A lot of my success is due the people on this forum. The information that I have found here is priceless. We can do anything!!!!!!!!!, with a little help from our friends.

You can do an interior endcap. Go slow, stop for awhile if you get frustrated.
Make templets out of inexpensive material. When I remodeled our 22' trailer I first made a full size mock up out of cardboard. It helped my wife understand what I was talking about. Once she was happy I made masonite templets of the walls. Masonite cost me about $10.00 a sheet. Once again I let my wife approve it. After she said yes I pulled out the Mahogany plywood at $80.00 a sheet. Making templets lets you cut and fit and refit as much as you want without ruining the good stuff.

Read whats here, ask some questions, and dive in head first! Its all in the name of fun

Enjoy your day!

Here we go again

Now that the front endcap is back together it is time to fix the rear one. The damage on this one is not nearly as bad, maybe only 5 segments

After what you just accomplished, this should be "easy" for you-- unless the sloping rear is more difficult?
