Using 82/20 Aluminum extrusions ?

It’s been awhile since this has been discussed, but has anyone used the 8020.net extrusions for framing in an AS?

My wife really wants to keep our front gaucho, but I like the dinette layout for having indoor meals with our crew of 5-7 adults/teenagers, so I’m researching plans for fold down 36x16” bench seats along the sides. These would allow us to continue using the gaucho as a slide out bed.

The simplest approach would be to use fold down hinges that are used in marine applications. These can support up to 500#s. I would most likely need to add some H extrusions behind the interior skins for mounting support.

Framing a fold down bench with fold away legs with the 8020 extrusions is another approach.

I’d plan to use Z bar hangers to mount 36x10” back side cushions above the benches.

I'll be using the 10 series to build a frame for a twin bed.

23FB Queen to Twin Conversion Using 80/20 Extruded Aluminum Frames

We finished the conversion of our International Serenity 23FB bedroom from a queen bed to two 34” x 80” twin beds using 80/20 extruded aluminum. Picture 4 illustrates one of the 80/20 frames that we designed and built.

I placed the project details on The 23 FB Forum at Post 1618 here: http://www.airforums.com/forums/f142...166374-81.html if you are interested in the details.

I’m happy to answer questions posted to The 23 FB Forum.

Hi

The stuff comes in a wide range of sizes. It also is available metric or us dimensioned. Each size has both "light" and "standard" extrusions. Standard is normally the lower cost approach.

The first step in any project using these parts is to work out how small an extrusion you can get away with. It's going to be lighter and cheaper. Next is to look at the corners. The "plate" connectors will give you the most strength / rigidity, but they aren't as pretty.

Cost can add up quite fast. You may find that a local welding shop can do a better job for less money ....
