stripped interior skins, what primer/paint to use.

We have gutted, replaced interior wiring, insulation. Moving on to putting the stripped skins back in. We want to paint. Our question what paint and or primer to use on the stripped interior skins. Thanks for your help.

We stripped the vinyl off our interior skins on the 66. This was the first year AS switched from Zolatone to vinyl. May not be period correct, but the vinyl was in bad shape. We primed with Kilz Adhesion to make sure the Zolatone system bonded well. We will be using the same on our 55.

I used both Kilz and Zinsser both. sand, wash, primer, sand, wash, primer, sand, wash paint, sand, wash, paint, sand, wash and paint.





How many layers was that again?

Once I had the interior skin stripped and installed, I wiped down the interior with TSP. Once dry I primed with Kilz Adhesive. We couldn't find this particular Kilz locally so we had one of the box stores order for us. Then we used Zolatone Flex with the base coat and finally the top coat. It holds up great and very happy with the results. This is the only roll on Zolatone. This is an incredibly tough, scrubable surface.

Extraordinarily happy. Thrilled. It is so many payers because even after cleaning with scrubbing bubbles, those weird white fiberglass sponge things, TSP, vinegar, soap, etc. it was still this 70's yellow. It is now eggshell white and robins egg blue. Dare I say gorgeous. Yes. It is holding up well. Although right now it is just me banging around in it, in the spring I open a store, an apothecary, in her. So I'll be able to tell you then how she holds up with (hopefully) large amounts of traffic.

Before you put the skins back on you should consider sealing all the seams behind the insulation. Wurth Seam sealer is about the best as it's used for joint sealing in German cars. Not cheap but while you have it apart you should consider it

Rustoleum makes primer especially for aluminum. I used a self etching primer when I did mine.
Consider hitting all the metal with a orbital sander first, the 'rough' surface helps the paint stick better.

Thank you and it would have been a great idea. But we are past that point with polyiso insulation taped into place at every seam.

Yes Thank you we have used that where we found Galvanic corrision. We sanded and sprayed that to stop it.

We finished our '68 this spring. It has the vinyl on the interior walls, so we cleaned it very well (Simple Green solution and brush), then used a paint called "Cabinet Enamel" from the local Lowes. (They can mix to any color on their color cards.)
We've got about 30 nights in the trailer since and, so far, it's holding up well with no stickiness.
