NFPA 1192 should be our guide

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) publishes NFPA 1192, "Standard on Recreational Vehicles". I wish more forum posts would reference NFPA 1192 guidance.

NFPA 1192 covers fire & life safety, fuel systems and equipment, plumbing systems and equipment, 120/240V AC electrical systems and equipment (NFPA 70 - National Electric Code), and 12V DC electrical systems and equipment (ANSI/RVIA LV Low Voltage System Standard).

RVIA has formally adopted NFPA 1192 as the association's standard.

NFPA 1192 is available with free access via:
http://www.nfpa.org/codes-and-standa...tail?code=1192

Is following NFPA 1192 statutory? That depends. Is following NFPA 1192 a good idea? YES.

Check your insurance policy, which I suspect is like ours and lists the following as "NOT covered": "C. Faulty, negligent, inadequate, or defective...(2) Design, specifications, workmanship, repair, renovation, remodeling..., (3) Materials used in repair, renovation, restoration,... or maintenance"

I'd say that all Airstream repairs and restoration should follow NFPA 1192 as consensus "best practice". Think twice if someone recommends a method or equipment not in compliance with the latest NFPA 1192.

Individuals are under no legal obligation to follow the referenced codes. Should they? That is totally a personal decision.

I completely disagree with this statement.IT SHOULD NOT BE A PERSONAL DECISION WHETHER THEY BUILD SAFELY OR NOT. All RV should have some standard they they should be built to. I dont have a problem if someone wants to build something the way they want too disregarding standards that have been used for years and they end up burning themselves and their family up. Oh well NATURAL SELECTION at it finest. If they ever sell that RV and it is not done correctly or safely then they should be held accountable for any loss of life or property.

You may be factually incorrect.

I'm not licensed to practice law, so recommend that you validate with legal counsel that "Individuals are under no legal obligation to follow the referenced codes."

In some states, such as 2016 California Code Health and Safety Code - HSC Div 13, PART 2 , CHAPTER 4, Section 18027.3.
"h) It is unlawful for any person to do either of the following:
(2) Alter or convert, or cause to be altered or converted, any recreational vehicle in a manner that is inconsistent with ANSI Standard No. A119.2 or A119.5 or the NFPA 1192 Standard on Recreational Vehicles when the recreational vehicle is used, occupied, sold, or offered for sale within this state."

In most states, such as here in Texas under the Transportation Code, it is illegal to tow on any public road a trailer containing LP-gas installations, containers, or equipment, other than a farm trailer, unless the vehicle complies with NFPA 52, NFPA 54, NFPA 57, NFPA 58, NFPA 1192... as appropriate.

Personal preference? Why would anyone not follow the national consensus life safety codes in their Airstream?

When there is loss of life from fire, it is investigated to determine the cause. The statistics are used by the NFPA to determine if a code change is necessary. When the code is changed, its to save lives & property. Why then would anyone not want to follow code ? And if you elect not to follow code & someone gets seriously injured, you can be held liable even if you no longer own the unit. And don't think they cannot figure out the who ! IMHO it's a lot simpler and safer to follow the applicable standards. Has a tendency to keep you alive to continue the usual debates on Airforums...
