Based on the picture below.. what is most likely under this carpet?

Looking to remove carpet, and metal strip in order to add engineered hardwood planks over the vinyl and throughout the flooring.

Trying to make the flooring as level as possible without removing the vinyl. The carpet rides slightly higher at the moment.

Your carpet and vinyl are applied on your plywood subfloor. When you remove the carpet, and the vinyl is missing, you have a couple of options to level the subfloor. You can use a self leveling material like Ardex or get a scrap piece of vinyl and patch in where the carpet was installed. Renovators have used Ardex on Airstream subfloors. But someday if you decide to replace your new plank flooring, I don’t know how easy it would be to remove the Ardex. You may be better off to cut your existing vinyl at your cabinet bases and remove it. Is your new plank flooring glue down or floating?

Thanks bubba. We will be using floating flooring. We will not be using Ardex. We can try to remove carpet and vinyl piece of flooring to see if that will level the floor.

I didnt want to remove the vinyl in fear of disturbing asbestos - but not sure either.

Normally, the tile with asbestos were 9”x9” square and the adhesive.
