We purchase our vintage Airstream mattress and gaucho foam from the FoamFactory. We by 4x8 sheets and cut it to fit. They also sell the mattress covers to your dimensional specs.

We bought our foam for the Safari from https://foamforyou.com/. For the mattress, we used a 4" piece of Lux Foam for the base and then topped it with an inch of medium foam and an inch of memory foam. The dinette cushions were just 4" of Lux foam. A little over $500 for enough foam to do two single mattresses and four cushions for the dinette. Produced a comfortable mattress. I will probably use these guys again. - Mark

Thank you for all the direction on mattress!

Next question… I need to trim the vista windows, new skylight, and entire front window. The trim needs to frame the window but also close up the 1.5” gap between interior skin and window/outside skin. I have brainstormed this a bit and haven’t really come up with a great solution.

What have you guys seen? Anything I can make?

I can't help on this one. I'm lucky, my 75 Overlander didn't have these leaky, cloudy vista windows. Neither does our 86 Limited.

My friend's 76 Sovereign has vista windows. I think there was some type of plastic surround that might have also guided the pull down blind. I didn't work on the windows, but my friend did. Here is a photo that may be helpful.

Thank you! There are a few places that you can order the old style frames from for about $200 each!

Congratulations! I’ll be following you here but if you are on Instagram it’s easier for me there. My name is @2.infinity.and.beyond.travels and I am fixing up a 1972 Overlander. Good luck with your new AS

Wing Window Interior Trim

All -

Few updates!

Heading in for exterior polish this weekend and will be gone for 3-4 weeks!

Interior is complete less the upholstery/blinds. Looks like we are going to get sponsored by Shumacher which will be awesome!

Punch list item I need help with...Interior trim for the wing windows. I ordered a set from Inland and they are no where close to the fit and also came damaged. I have opined for a while on how to create a nice clean finish and I simply cannot. What have others done? Know anyone selling a set?

Hi there: I survived a cold February. You're smart to subcontract the polish job. I've spent all winter re-polishing the DW's 1986 Limited 34'. It was damaged by deicer going over Vail and the Eisenhower tunnel 3 years ago mid May. We hit a spring snow storm. The roads were wet. The deicer attacked the bare aluminum skins and corroded them badly.

Well, I just finished the job this week. It took about 110 hours of pushing a polisher around. I've had more fun doing other things.

There are other vintage Airstream parts suppliers. Maybe you will find someone with a set.

Very nice result. Great work.

Any thoughts about ceramic coating or something similar to preserve the finish longer?

Utah is one of my favorite states. It is fun to explore there.

Yes, I've tried automotive waxes but they tend to "haze" the reflectivity. There are other products I will try this spring. I just need to find one that protects and goes on clear.

Spitfire Trailers (Chris) in Denver did the polish. Couldn’t be more impressed. Highly recommend to anyone needing a polish in CO.

A polished Airstream sure looks great. A polished Airstream requires more exterior maintenance than the original clear coat. Let the corrosion begin with the next rain, the next bird bomb, the next bug splat, the next drive through a wet road with deicers still on it, etc. etc. A good sealant will help slow it down, but likely should be done every year. It's a big trailer to wax.

Your trailer is made with the same aluminum skins as my 75 Overlander 27', which is 6061 T6. It is much harder than the original Airstream aluminum 2024 T3 Alclad, which has a layer of pure aluminum on the exterior surface for corrosion protection. Ask Chris what polish process he uses to get the 6061 T6 shinny. I wonder if he uses a buffing wheel on his polisher or uses the Nuvite process. He might not say as it might be a trade secret for him.

Here is a photo of my Overlander. I polished it myself, maybe 300 hours of dirty, boring work. It was quite corroded. It looks okay in the dark.

If I had indoor workspace at home I would have taken a shot at it...But out of all the steps in the Reno this one I was happy to outsource.
