1954 22’ Safari for sale in Flint, Michigan
This isn’t mine, I’m posting it for anyone who might have interest. I spotted this trailer earlier today and stopped to check it out. The owner said Airstream told him it’s a ’54 Flying Cloud, but the serial # 06059 and the photos on Vintage Airstream match up with a ’54 Safari.
It’s in pretty fair condition for being so old. The owner says the only mechanical problem is a broken water line. Other than that, he says everything works. He painted the interior with glossy beige latex. If it had the original Zolatone paint and unpainted wood, I would have been tempted to buy it.
The asking price is $2500 and, assuming his info is correct, I think that’s reasonable for anyone who wants a really old Airstream to have fun with and isn’t overly concerned about the cosmetics.
This is a California model with 13-panel end caps. The floor plan is quite unusual. There’s an enclosed toilet in front of the side dinette and a bunk bed over the “U” shaped benches in the rear. The toilet and fridge are not original, but it does have an original Panel-Ray heater which he says “works like a charm”. There is a dent in the lower front curbside and entry door plus some damage to the drip spout over the door and around the curbside wheel well. If anyone has interest, PM me for his name and phone #.

I saw that a few weeks ago. I did the quick u-turn. I still tease my wife that I am going to buy it every time we drive by it. She isn't laughing. It had a tag on it stating it was an abandoned trailer and it still has clothes and sleeping bags in it. He was asking 3,500 two weeks ago. It might pay to make him an offer he apparently dropped the price $1,000. I couldn't tell if it was sitting in a hole on the street side or not. I am glad you posted the info on it. I wondered what it was exactly.

His township ordered him to remove it. Can’t have old Airstream junk littering up a fancy neighborhood. He has taken that old trailer to the Grand Canyon and all over. Heck, it’s just getting broken in!
Actually, I might buy it if nobody beats me to it, despite the interior paint. How often do you find a rare old vintage Airstream trailer for $2500 which only needs minor repair to put it back in ready-to-camp condition?
Somebody stop me! I have seen much worse sell for much more. If only he hadn’t painted the interior, that trailer would probably be in my driveway now. It is 2’ longer but weighs about 300 lbs less than my ’66 Globetrotter. Gotta love those really old Airstreams, even if your local zoning board does not.

Looks to be in similar conditon to our '56 when we got it. The price is lower than we paid, but don't let it fool you...there's a lot of work to getting one in this condition "back to original". If you can live with the painted interior...it may not be so bad.
If you do go for it...you'll have a 60's GT & a 50's Safari like us! That extra three feet (with full-time beds) are wonderful! And gotta love those 13 panels ~

rog, buy it, it's 13 panels . that's a very fair price and if you're really worried about the paint, if it is in fact latex, you can strip that pretty easily without disturbing the zolotone.
i just looked at the pictures and the rear doesn't show the california whale tail, are you sure it's california made? i don't know when the whale tail came into production.

The leading "O" makes it an Ohio trailer. Being a 1954, one of the early Ohio trailers, just like my Liner.

I believe, 1954 Safaris were only made in Ohio. In CA, the 1954 22' trailers were Flying Clouds and included the "whale tail". 1954 Flying Clouds were also made in OH with 13 panels front & back.
Looks like the 1954 Safari in the Vintage Archives...and the VIN is right in line.

ok, California was on the tag, I think the same tag which had the serial #.
I am old and it was raining. My understanding of a "whale tail" is 7 segments with the "keystone" segment being wider than the others, like in a whale's tail. Am I wrong? Again? Where is the time out bench?

Now see what you bad folks have done! You went and got a guy with a good camera to photo the plaque which I tried to photo with my K-Mart camera.
Shame on you!

No, look at the plaque posted by another poor Michigan survivor, it's California made.

Sorry Rog...the 'O' (first digit) in the VIN# O-6059 means Ohio built. In the 50's the placques had BOTH Jackson Center Ohio (upper right) and Los Angeles (lower left) on it. Same placque - only the VIN number format changes.
From the Vintage Archives: 1954 Safari 22'
Ohio | O-6001 to O-6135
1954 Flying Cloud 22'
Ohio | O- 3155 to O- 3244
California | 7NNN (about 7600 to 7750)
The front kitchen/bath, street-side dinette, curbside closets & back bed(s) are indicative of the mid-'50s Safaris...I LOVE this layout!

Well ok then, I guess Airstream put the wrong plaque on this trailer and I guess you experts caught their mistake. Excuse me for posting incorrect information, even though it was exactly as tagged on the trailer.

My apologies, Shari, I see now that the plaque bears both Ohio and California, but this was apparently an Ohio built model. It is late and I am tired, so pardon me for being grouchy, please. I just meant to post what I thought was a pretty good find.

Several people have asked me for the seller's info, so we'll see how it goes. I have decided to pass, since I already have a very nice vintage model out behind the barn.
