1948 Globetrotter

Thought the group might like to see pics of the unit which is now on display outside the Philbrook Museum in Tulsa, OK. It is part of a show on "Stream Lined Design".

It is a great restoration. If it is your work - CLAIM IT !

Mods, there was not a thread for '48s so I stuck it in the '49. Perhaps you would like to create one and move it.

Rear bed, front dinette, shower, toilet, kitchenette. Sits high, looks like a new axle. 15 inch wheels with Goodyear tires. Note the treatment over the wheelwells.

I did it. It took me three weeks to get that shine. I had to tilt it on its side to polish the underside.

..... ok, sorry.

I wish I did it!

1948 Globetrotter - more pics

Had to go make something of myself this afternoon, so here are some more pics.

Rear bed looking towards front dinette. Note polished endcaps.

Front dinette looking towards rear bed. PanelRay type heater on the left by the door. Both thru the window.

The plaque detailing the display.

One of my toys! that I rode that beautiful day. '97 Honda Shadow 1100. Thinking about riding it to Branson next week for the Midwest rally.

Enjoy!

Did you see this '48 globetrotter? ...

... I didn't think so since only 6 people have viewed it. Seems there has been more interest in these oldies than this, or I wouldn't have bothered posting !

WOW WOW WOW! Very nice - someone really did a nice job - notice the new frame on it.

I didn't realize Airstream called its 48's Globetrotters - I thought they were all Wee Winds - learn something new every day..........

It IS beautiful, and thanks for sharing! I for one love seeing the older trailers, and imagine what a trailer vacation was like then. Its also hugely inspirational for those of us with older "works-in-progress" trailers. Thanks

did ya catch the serial number? I think the year is correct, but it cannot be a Globetrotter. It was not introduce until 1961.

Ken, I don't know if it has a new frame, but definitely has a new A and ball receiver. The pipe can be seen from the back.

Dave and Martha Makel of "Trailer Buff" did a trailer like that back a couple of years ago. It was featured in Airstream Life Mag. Not sure if it's the same one. The one he did I think was put back to "original" no mod's like it was from the factory. Dave is known for his very high level of restoration's.

Don't remember which issues of Airstream Life it was in, I'll try and find it.

Not saying it's his work, but it could be.

The Liners had names that went with their interiors. It wasn't an exact science though. And there weren't that many so it was kind of a customized as they went along type of thing. ( I found out a few things when I was trying to buy a '47 Liner.) Someday I will still go after one, because they really, really captured my heart.

Also the pics in the '49 link have a frame that look like they have box beam coming out the back. This one has a round pipe.

Hi Frank:

The 22' Globe Trotter (or Globetrotter, take your pick) was a fully loaded Airstream introduced in 1949 (see floor plan). It was changed slightly and produced for the next few years, as seen in the photo. Enjoy!

'48 Globetrotter - Axle, Belly Pan, etc.

The card in the 3rd pic of post no.3 says "Courtesy Airstream, Inc." right under identifying the unit as a '48 Globetrotter, so it could be one of those units kept at the factory that I have read about here. Might even have been done by them.

In terms of originality, I don't know but I think the axle has been replaced because it is straight, no drop, and rides very high. Imagine those wheel-well cover off, and picture the distance to the rim. Wow!

BTW, those are held on with 1/4 turn quick fasteners. I think the belly pan is also unique in that it it has some crimping, but lots of Phillips screws.

If it is a factory unit, it's kinda interesting knowing how they would do a restoration.

Anyone reaaally interested enough for me to stop back by and ask someone at the museum who it belongs too?

If you click on this pic it is easy to see that the front has a pipe too, so the unit at the museum identified as a '48 has the pipe coming out the back only, so the frame has either been modified or replaced.
