I inspected this trailer on a dark night several weeks ago. It is my opinion that the bands on the trailer cover a seam that enabled an opening greater than the rear window to be removed. What looked to be a continuous cut could be seen from the inside. I can only suspect that at some point in this trailers life it may have been used for some kind of concession thru the rear.

I suspect the only way to alter this situation will be to replace 15 panels in the rear. As these are not compound panels, I seriously considered it.

Then Drew, my son, got accepted to the University of Findlay! My Airstream dreams are now "on hold"! Good lord, I could buy a few new Airstreams for what this program costs. wow.

I wish 3stream good luck. She's a potential beauty!

flooded airstream worse than this 48?

When I first viewed this thread, I thought that it would be a wonderful buy. Still do. although i wonder why some of us would give others grief about the purchase of one of the flooded AS's from Georgia, but not poo-poo a restore of this jewel. I cannot see how one project would be any harder/more expensive than the other. The difference when done, of course would be the finished product: a restored 48 trailer on one hand; a rebuilt 2008 or 2009 on the other. I personally would rather spend the 10,000 hours (5 years full time?) on a 2008 trailer and have a trailer that is 7 years old than to restore a 48. But then again, I would want to use the trailer, not have a restored piece. Well, as the saying goes differing strokes for differing folks. I just wish I could have found 5 or more AS'rs that could have invested $11k for the new ones-I just couldn't pony up enough cash to come close to the $89k winning bid. Darn!
be cool
good luck on the rebuild/restore.

Follow the link to see the photos of the liner. Went and got it on a flat bed. Yes the rear window has been completely cut out- and patched- quite the project! However, everything is there in the trailer- all fixtures and original components. Andy will post more info soon.

I was forwarded the link on Craigslist and called Jimmy, the owner, and spoke with him about the trailer. Upon seeing more pictures I decided that it was worth the investment. I have been looking for a Liner and have passed on a few worse examples and a couple better examples. The asking price I felt was worth the investment giving that it is complete with all the light fixtures and hardware. The tongue is broke off but was with the trailer as was the brass number plate and the cast brass Airstream name plate on the rear. It is in comparable condition to our '39 Clipper but more complete. Both need frame rebuilds and panel replacement but the end product will be worth the work.

I'm glad to hear that a WDCU bought this...the likelyhood of me seeing it greatly increased! I wanted it too, but my max was $500. I emailed and called but couldn't get Jimmy to go to my level. Congrats April and Andy. Can't wait to see it returned to its original glory. You'll likely do a better job and do it sooner than I would have!

Yeah... April and Andy bought it! You guys have a real fine collection going to say the least. Will you be bringing it to CBR? I know, it is a long way from camp ready. .... I was picking up my new 59 Tradewind in WV yesterday and almost came by. If the changing of tires and reworking my tow lights had not taken so long, i would have given you a ring.

Thanks for the comments on the website- I am getting ready to relaunch it soon with all the trailers (since there have been new additions). Here is a link to the gallery of photos of all the trailers we have- one of which (the 1956) is on e-bay.

Anyway- the 1948... what a interesting job it was to take it off that flat bed!! The owner of the junk yard put it on with a fork lift (it damaged the belly pan a little but it was going to need replaces anyway). The driveway was pure ice as we tried to take it off - it was Andy, my father, and me (5.5 months pregnant) using lots of kitty litter and chains put after an hour in 20 degree weather we got it!

Frank you should have stopped! Even though we are in PA we live right off interstate 68 in Western MD and we see Airstreamers fairly regularly on the interstate! Of course because we have like 5 or 6 in the driveway and front yard at all times- we are always having people stop and look at them! Not a weekend goes by we don't spend an hour or more touring all the trailers at the house with some enthusiasts.
