Traveling During Pandemic
We were caught aboard our sailboat in Fort Myers Beach FL by the pandemic. The truck and Airstream were in storage in Homestead, FL. Miami went into lockdown. Fort Myers was in denial. Too many people behaving foolishly. We cut our sailing season short, hustled to prep the boat for storage, fetched the rolling rig from Homestead, and hit the highway for home in CO. We paid dearly and tipped generously for transportation and assistance at every step.
It’s been an eerie drive thru FL, GA, AL, MS, TN, AR, and tonight in OK. Very light traffic. Most businesses along the highway closed, save for Walmart and Home Depot. Disturbing observations, however, of denial/defiance. People acting foolishly.
The Airstream provides isolation for us, well provisioned and stopping only for fuel and sleep in interstate rest stops. How thankful we are for our rolling cocoon. We should be home in two more days.
Be safe, people. Maintain distance and isolation. Protect others by protecting yourself.
