I don't know if that is a good way to encourage visitors to come to Oregon. We have visited and camped in Oregon on a number of occasions over the last fifteen years. We would already be turned off on visiting Oregon because of the mayhem in their largest city. By adding a 30% surcharge to State Park campsites, they have made it a slam dunk for us.

Considering that we are in the middle of a pandemic, I suspect the intent is to discourage out of state visitors while allowing residents to recreate.

The only downside that I can see is that Oregon residents may get spoiled by having easy access to their parks and want to make the change permanent.

As an Oregonian, taxpayer, and avid OSP user (100% of our trips are within the state this year and last):

The Oregon State Parks System gets no funding from taxpayers. The OSP revenue from user fees is down $22 million. Several parks can't reopen this year. Staff are working at about 35% staffing level and still doing a great job with a great attitude. The hope is to bring in $500,000 from the surcharge to offset losses.

As a Oregonian trying to stay safe in a pandemic:

Seeing Washington, Idaho, California and Arizona state license plates around me while restaurants and businesses outside the park are closed is a bit unnerving. Especially when several campsites commingle without masks.

Stay safe. Wear masks on trails. Thanks.

This is nothing new.
New York State parks have charged more for out of state travellers for as long as I can remember.

Charges are about only two things, raising revenue or influencing behaviour.

As state and federal tax revenues are decreasing you'll most likely see camping fee increase to cover costs. We're already seeing this in the private campground sector.

The cost of RV camping will increase on all fronts whether it be more expensive camping, RV now selling at MSRP and more costly replacement parts and components brought on by gaps in manufacturing capacity and pent up demand.

So let's not get down on Oregon.

Wisconsin and I also believe Ohio state parks charge extra for out of state campers, and have for many years.

My bet is that temporary will become permanent.

I believe Ill. charges xtra for out of state. My cousin is from Hammond Ind. area & we had a chance to get together yrs. ago at Kankakee state park {Il} dry no elect water or drain, he stated they charged xtra other Il state parks at that time late 70s, he now refuses to camp in Il. At that time it was $6.00. I don't no if Il. still charges extra. I have camped all over US never pd. extra for out of state. Last trip [7 yrs ago] Ky. Nc. In. Tn. Oh. all state parks except 1 in Ky, 1 In. 1 Nc. but did state parks in all, never pd sur. charge. Plus Ia. Mo. 3 yrs. ago..

Missouri voters approved a sales tax many years back. It funds the State Conservation department and State Parks. While there are also camping fees, they are very reasonable and are the same for all users of the state park system regardless of where you live.

The primary source of funding for the state park system is half of the dedicated constitutional tax of one-tenth-of-one-percent parks, soils and water sales tax, which provides about three-fourths of the division's budget for operation and development of state parks. All additional funding comes from revenues generated in the state park system and some federal funds. It really has done wonders and I have seen major improvements when comparing the facilities pre sales tax and post.

Thank you Georgia. Georgia State Parks provide a 20% senior discount to anyone who age qualifies, out of sate or country doesn't matter.

We quit staying in the Florida State Parks. It just ticks me off that Reserve America charges a $13 reservation fee for a $12 campsite.

I'm no fan of Reserve American and do all I can to avoid lining their pockets but, the fee is $6.70 per reservation (not per night). Not so bad if you are staying a week, a bit stiff if you are one day hopping it.

I guess Reserve America has lowered their reservation fees since we were last fleeced by them. $6.70 is still outrageous for a one night stay in a $10.00 campsite.

When the Florida State Parks did their own reservations, everything worked just fine. I have always felt that there were some state legislators that were rewarded for giving this contract to Reserve America.

Does this fee apply even if you have existing reservations?

Reserve America charges for the campsite and their reservation fee when you reserve the site.

Sorry, my question was not very clear; is the new Oregon out-of-state fee applicable to reservations made prior to its enactment? We made reservations several months ago for Oregon State Park campgrounds all along the coast for September. I was confirmed a rate but was curious if there will be an additional surcharge now.

Thanks,

Reservation fees seem to be the norm on public facilities as time goes on. You do have consider there definitely is an overhead to maintaining these functions and many of the states have outsourced these functions to outside agencies. I guess I balance it all out figuring in most cases I'm paying less than what the nightly charge is in a private campground.

In many cases many state governmental agencies have outsourced payment functions to private businesses. In Missouri all the Department of Revenue outlets where you pay your sales taxes, pick up you license plates or renew them, and drivers licensing renewals or issuance are now in the hands of agents who collect a fee for their services. And even if you have the ability to renew online or pay your taxes online, to pay with a credit card requires you to pay a convenience fee. The days of government hiring employees to do these tasks are long gone in many locales.

Sort of a shame on the camping side because many of us had established relationships with the folks at parks who used to handle the reservations and payment. For the Moraine View Rally I used to call the state park and they always were good about keeping us all together on certain loops. Now we all have to scramble 6 months to the day to get everyone to reserve so that we can all be in the same loop. For those who can't make those commitments, it's something that they may not be able come to. Quite honestly attendance truly leveled off for our event since Reserve America became the reservation arm for Illinois State Parks.

Thanks,
Since most of the reservation systems take your money at the time of the reservation, I would think that existing reservations will be honored at the existing rate....assuming you paid for the stay in full at reservation time.

Well the way I look at it, there are a lot of places to camp and obviously those places that charge excessive rates just won't get my business. Some of the best places to look at are the Corp of Engineers campgrounds. I've got a lifetime America the Beautiful senior pass and have recently stayed at some beautiful parks that offer full hookup sites for $13 a night if you have that pass. Still have to pay the fee for using the reservation site, but there there are lots of very economical choices out there!

As noted higher rates for out of state residents are not uncommon and the fees take a lot of different forms. Either directly upon the rates you pay, park entry fees, and in some states like mine, are built into the sales taxes which visitors and residents pay alike.
