Anywhere / Anytime 2020 travel plans

2020 Airstream travel plans post Loveland cancellation since you asked:

1. Enjoy the traveling comforts of my own personal "mobile quarantine unit".
2. Caravan (12 days) from TX to Winnipeg MB when the border to the frozen north re-opens.
3. Camp at casinos/commercial/state parks & free campgrounds as available.
4. Sight see/ tour stuff as available.
5. Eat in mostly.
6. Get rid of caravanners in Winnipeg and return home (14 days) solo.
7. Sight see/ tour stuff as available.
8. Continue social distancing for awhile.

That ought to add some fun into all the isolation we've been doing.

Just out of curiosity, what is a "mobile" quarantine unit?

If we are under stay at home orders and told within this to avoid non-essential travel...which has been defined as grocery shopping and going to the pharmacy as seldom as possible, and medical appointments...travel for leisure and camping is prohibited.

In my opinion.

It’s for the best interest of everyone, the common good, whatever you want to call it.

And, it seems to be working where people are taking it seriously and being compliant.

Once the stay at home orders are lifted, the curves are actually flatter, we feel safe enough, and we can actually find hand sanitizer, sanitizing wipes and other basics in the stores again without too much drama, we'll look at going camping. It's all very much in the "we'll see." category vs. the "gotta do it soon" department. For us, ensuring our own safety and the safety of others is more important than dragging Rocinante out to the woods at the first opportunity. Other changes will likely include seeking out less popular destinations - the quieter state parks, the less well-known National Parks, and so on, while looking for campgrounds with more room between sites rather than less. That all probably means avoiding most commercial RV parks, which are usually more tightly packed than city / county / state / national park and state / national forest locations.

How will camping change for you after COVID 19?

Well, this “California type” is looking out the screen door and thinking that this California backyard will suffice for a good while. The sheltering at home has not been onerous, other than having to be in line at 7am for “seniors hour” at the market and having to share my beloved neighborhood walking routes with all the loosed gym rats. Hoping to get back into Airstreaming in the Fall.

It will probably be a bit harder to get my wife to go camping because camping is riskier than staying home, but when we go it probably won’t change one bit. We generally camp at NFS, COE or NP campgrounds without hookups, keep to ourselves with our two beagles, eat in at the Airstream or take out from a restaurant.

Right now I am just a bit apprehensive about when we will finally be able to camp like everyone else is.

Mobile Quarantine Facility (unit) - The crew of Apollo 11 in quarantine after returning to Earth, visited by Richard Nixon.

The Apollo 11 mobile quarantine facility, with the crew on board, is unloaded from a C-141 aircraft. The mobile quarantine facility (MQF) is a converted Airstream trailer used by NASA to quarantine astronauts returning from Apollo lunar missions for the first few days after splashdown. The MQF was on the aircraft carrier that picked up the capsule. Once the aircraft carrier reached port, the MQF was flown to Houston, and the crew served the remainder of the 21 days of quarantine in the Lunar Receiving Laboratory at the Manned Spacecraft Center. The purpose of the quarantine was to prevent the spread of any contagions from the Moon, though the existence of such contagions was considered unlikely. It functioned by maintaining a lower pressure inside and filtering any air vented.

The MQF contained living & sleeping facilities as well as communications equipment which the astronauts used to converse with their families. The Apollo 11 crew also used this equipment to speak with President Nixon who personally welcomed them back to Earth aboard the recovery ship USS Hornet after splashdown.

The trailers housed the three crew as well as a physician and an engineer who ran the MQF & powered down the command module. Four MQFs were built for NASA.

There are many conflicting conclusions on what the facts are and what the right behaviors are now and going forward to prevent catching the virus and prevent spreading the virus.

I have had to change my own conclusions about the safest behavior for me and my family as data becomes available. Constants are staying home, getting groceries at curbside, wearing a mask when out of my yard not in car, wearing gloves whne fueling, and washing hands (a lot). So far. so good.

Since it is important for the U.S.A. and world economy to get back on track, many countries and local governments will try many approaches to get that done. Some will work well and some not so much. We can learn from them and adopt the best known and safest methods to continue with our pursuit of happiness.

I am going to be very careful about when I start camping, where I go, and how I behave to protect myself and to protect others. To paraphrase Smokey the Bear: Only you (and your pet horseshoe bat) can prevent the spread of COVID19

As testing increases, and the numbers of those who are or have been actually infected with this virus increases, the statistics will change.

I’m not going to try to second guess experts like Dr. Fauci, who have no vested interest in exaggerating the seriousness of this virus.

I have a few areas of expertise, but epidemiology is not one of them.

When those whose leadership and expertise I trust say it is safe to move about, go camping, relax social distancing standards, etc., I will do so.
