Canadian looking to resume camping in the US

We are nearing the point where we need to decide if we can resume travel in the US for the winter - basically a huge bucket list item we invested heavily in pre-pandemic and had 2 great winters with the hope of more to come. We have to decide whether to forget about it for this winter (again) or hope the border will re-open. Anyone have any ideas about the policies driving this? Why we could fly and do the same thing but can't drive?

A US government rep advised in a recent interview that the reason for the US border being closed is that they are not equipped to check vaccine and Covid test status at the land border crossings. At airports, the US border service isn't doing it, it is the airlines who do the checks. At the land borders, it is a training and staffing issue.

This wasn't spelled out clearly in the interview, but I suspect that there are differences in their ability to deal with this at the northern and southern US borders.
