Airstream Sews Mask and Gowns

I saw this today and wanted to pass it along
https://www.sidneydailynews.com/news...-curb-covid-19

The employee team estimates they can produce over 1,200 masks and 50-60 isolation gowns by the end of this week.

In my own community volunteers are doing the same thing and we have a well organized network of folks who procure supplies, distribute them at drop off points and then collect them as finished mask and gowns for local hospitals and healthcare providers.

I've been sewing as well and have made just a few dozen masks. More importantly I cleaned out our shop and rounded up 2 boxes on N95s from rehab project and donated them.

Who else is pitching in?

We’ve sewn right at 100 masks and here sent mist of them to New York and the rest to our local hospital.

My wife has here crafting equipment working at full speed to make face shields. She has a local hospital that needs all she can make. Cost is very low and she has enough materials to make a few hundred.

The next few weeks will be brutal. See if you can chip in to help. Please stay safe though as we are about to go through a terrible ride these next three weeks.

I set up last week a recurring donation to my local Food Pantry.

Do what you can.

I've made and donated to my local hospital 25 masks and 2 boxes of nitrile gloves we had. I also mailed masks I made to a friend who has multiple risk factors. I'm out of elastic currently, but if I can find more, I will make more. I have LOTS of fabric! We are donating to our local food shelf every trip to the grocery store (per usual).
Gotta do what we can.

Would someone provide a link to a pattern for making the masks.

Also, what fabric is best.

Here are some links BUT you should check with your local health folks to see what they actually want. These two patterns are very different. I've made both of these - the pleated one is simpler. My local hospital prefers them with ties rather than elastic.

Mask patterns

There are many mask patterns and great how-to youtube videos flooding the internet. Google around and find the mask style that works best for you in terms of your sewing ability and fit you'd like to achieve. Use a double layer of tightly woven 100% cotton - T-shirt fabric and quilting fabric are both in that category. Go for it!

I am sewing masks for family, friends and neighbors. They should not be out foraging for professional use only masks. I got my pattern off of Youtube. Mine are 100% cotton with a pocket for a filter (PM 2.5) which I got off of Amazon. I wear mine to go food shopping, along with plastic gloves and a cute pair of overalls, think Rosie the Riveter.

Nice mask! I've been making similar and using floral wire inserted in the upper seam to create a pinch point. I am making insertable filters from a large pile of hepa filter vacuum bags I had.

Attached is a great video for making masks. There are also many more on line. Some hospitals are NOT taking the homemade masks, but other organizations are. (Nursing homes, etc).

It seems we may be close to a blanket recommendation for everyone to wear masks of some sort, given the evidence that many asymptomatic carriers are out there transmitting this virus.

Those who don’t have sewing machines will need masks from those who do.

Mask pattern

I created a pattern and instructions for a washable lined surgical mask. Not the N95, but good enough to offer some protection.

The local state hospital nurses were being required to wear a one use surgical mask as long as possible, and had to produce a broken one to get a new one. They have to wash their scrubs every day, shower before they go to work and as soon as they get home...used masks were just too scary for them.

Now they each have two -one to wear and one to wash. Anyone wants a copy, just e-mail me and I will forward it. atwebs@yahoo.com - mask pattern.

We are sewing masks as well for our local hospital. The hospital went from wanting masks with elastic to ones with ties (they will take both!). We are trying to do this assembly line fashion but there are only two of us

Doctor shows mask his wife made from vacuum HEPA filter - video has detailed instructions, link for pattern is under "show more" below the video (have no idea if they're any safer than the cotton, but I like the idea of the HEPA):

Cool video. Good luck finding those particular filters on Amazon. I looked and saw absolutely nothing.

On topic, I absolutely love that Airstream is re-purposing their skilled sewing teams and having them contribute to this effort.
