New member question about Caravel length

Hi everyone,

New to the forum. First post! My wife and I finally decided to pull the trigger on ordering our very first trailer. We decided on a 2021 Caravel 22FB and we are really excited. I have one concern:

Our storage space for the trailer is going to be tight (lengthwise) and I can’t seem to get a clear answer on how long the Caraval 22FB is....???

Specs say 21’8” BUT the Bambi 22FB (which does not include a rear bumper also says 21’8”

How can two essentially identical trailers be the same length when one has a bumper and the other does not? I’ve come to two possible conclusions and I’m hoping that there is a Caraval 22FB owner out there that can give me a real life answer.

1. The measurement is bogus or it doesn’t include the bumper. This conclusion is supported by the fact that I have found on at least one AS dealer site (AS Buffalo) that the Caravel is listed at 22’11” which is 13” longer than the 21’8” on Airstream’s website
(this would exceed my storage length of 22’6”)

2. The tongue on the Caraval is shorter than the Bambi to compensate for the added length of the bumper...

My question to the community is pretty simple. I probably should have started with this. Exactly how long is a 2021 Caraval 22FB from bumper to tongue?

The Airstream website lists the 22FB Caravel at 21'11".

Have you considered the 20' Caravel instead? I was originally intending on a 23FB (similar to the 22, but w/ dual axles, mostly because of the dual axles), but decided we liked the kitchen/dinette layout in the 20' better than the 22'/23'. (Yes, the bed is a little smaller, it's cozy...)

How’s the width of your storage? Can you park slightly askew? Or are you tight on width too. Hopefully someone will be able to confirm actual length to help you plan better.

From tongue to rear bumper you should be at 22ft. We have a 22FB Sport and from tongue to rear it is 22ft.

The rear of the trailer is tapered, so the rear most point is about 3 ft up from the ground (at least on my 22 Sport).

I have a 2018 AS Sport 22 which is very similar floor plan as the Caravel. It is a bit snug on the storage side but adequate. What I like about this floor plan is the bath room which is a usable size. I down sized from a 35' 5th wheel after I lost my camping mate do to that nasty cancer thing, so now it is just me and the pup. I love the AS and have come to the realization that with the 5th wheel and the massive storage space, I was hauling around a bunch of unused junk. No longer have to log around the 16,000 beast with a truck, my Jeep Grand Cherokee does just fine towing the AS. As for the length, I believe that is calculated from the center of the ball to the back of the trailer. Good luck and enjoy.

Forgot to mention the bed. It is a real pain to make up. You might also want to consider purchasing a RV Superbag or a Beddy's to make this chore livable.

The best way is to actually go to an Airstream dealer and measure for yourself, don't rely on website specs. Make sure it is the exact model that you considering purchasing. Spend some time and sit in that model and maybe some others of a similar size. Don't rush your decision.

We found it difficult to see the actual model we wanted to purchase prior.

Yes, the bed is a pain as I have the same 201`8 22FB Sport - but I can get it done with a little sweat-equity. Love, love love our AS though!

If you’re ordering now, you’ll be getting a 2022 by the time it’s manufactured, 6 month waiting list currently.

We have a 2021 Caravel 16RB, maiden voyage next week, whoot whoot! AS specs list it at 16’2” ( bumper to coupler. My measurement is 16’5”.

You probably haven’t decided on a hitch at this point, but IF you go with a ProPride or Hensley,, both of which mount onto the trailer’s tongue, that will add another 9-10 inches. Even with a small trailer, we went with the ProPride. Other hitches won’t add to the length of your trailer.

Hope this helps a little bit. Lots to learn, fun process, not cheap.

FYI, yes, the bed is a ROYAL pain to make. The one negative so far. We’ll see how having a black/gray combo tank goes for our usage.

You should really consider the 20’ Caravel. It is really almost 21 ft. We have a 20’ Flying Cloud and the kitchen and Bathroom are the best, The bumper and bumper storage are also a big plus =

Yes I have. I prefer the 22 but I have already discussed changing my order to a 20FB with my dealer. Problem is that I already have my deposit for the production that is coming off the line in a few weeks. If I change to a 20 I’ll lose my place and will have to wait till April production (May delivery). A few months isn’t a big deal in the grand scheme of things. The important thing is that it fits in my storage location. Anyway....

Thanks everyone for your replies. I very much appreciate all of you. I’m going to take a long drive tomorrow to another dealer who has a 22FB on their lot and measure it myself.
