Caravel 19CB Solar

Hello,
How many watts of solar panels can you cram on top of a Caravel 19CB?
Thanks beforehand.

I’ve been able to get two 90 watt Zamp panels down the curb side. Looked and measured the road side and it may be possible to get a third or fourth. Watching…

I bought my panels from AM Solar. The standard size 90W fit on the road side just forward of the waste tank vent. I also put one of the slim 90W on the curb side with room for another behind it. So, based on my experience, you can comfortably fit 270W on the roof. Personally, instead of adding a third roof mounted panel, I decided to buy a portable panel to help out when parked in shaded locations.

Got a reply back from AM Solar - 400-600 watts possible.

Zamp also sells 45 watt slim panels. They are sometimes available as b stock. Two of them compared to a 90 offer flexibility in placement.

The quote from AM used NOIR 100W panels - 41" x 22" x 1.38", they fit the space more efficiently in my opinion. You could fit 6 with the NOIR. The ZAMP is long and skinny - 58.3" x 13.6" x 1.5", lucky to get two. I think the ZAMP 45s were created to be fillers for the 90s.

IrishGerald,
Please let us know what you finally end up with. I've been leaning over the roof of my 2022 19cb with a tape measure and have not been able to visualize 6 panels up there. Tried to take a few pictures but the angles were all distorted. Next week I'll have time to actually get up top and make some good measurements.

Shiny16,
Thanks for the information on the Zamp 45 watt slim panels. Since I already have two of the 90 watt Zamps on the roof, I'm sticking with them. Still hoping I can get one more 90 watt down the road side, but if not the 45 watt panels should work.

When AM replied they included a photo of the roof of a Caravel 19CB with 4 panels. But they aren’t using the skinny ZAMP panels. They use NOIR - 41" x 22"

Here, I figured out how to get the photo here. Compare to the other photo with one skinny ZAMP.

So then my question is why is everyone afraid of the end caps? Move the front two back, add two more in front of them.

Follow on question is how many Ahs in lithium will 400-600 watts of solar panels support? Nobody can agree.

The issue I see is that in the first photo the black tank vent is positioned behind the AC unit and the is no TV antenna. My 19 FC is has a roof top configuration like the second picture and I have detailed measurements. Based on these measurements, 90 watt Zamp Obsidian panels will fit on both the curb and street sides at the front. On the street side it gets close to the TV antenna. There remains enough space on the curb side to install a 45 watt Zamp Obsidian. Because of the position of the waste vent there isn’t room for another panel on the street side. If you don’t mind overhanging the end caps you could probably get 2 90 watt panels on the curb side.

Are you really “still looking”? For what it’s worth we have a Caravel 20FB and love the layout with the L shaped kitchen. I wouldn’t even consider a 19CB. We purchased near new back in October 2020. The trailer came with 180 watts on top (skinny 90W Zamps). The AS dealer installed the second panel and added a three inch lift prior to our purchase. Last spring we had the AS dealer add a third 90W Zamp and change the AGM batteries to Battleborn lithium. The original AGMs were toast. Batteries are now under the bed which frees up the old battery box for storage of chocks and leveling blocks. I still need to install the Victron Smart Shunt to monitor battery details but so far so good with the regular Victron Bluetooth phone app. I added the Bluetooth connection dongle myself which was needed. All I can say is the 270W total on the roof and lithium batteries has really worked out great for us.
