2022 vs 2021 weight and dimension changes
Hey all,
I am expecting to receive my 20FB in early October. My dealer has told me I will have the 2022 model. Airstream updated their brochures for the Caravel, and I noticed some differences and was wondering if any of you might help me understand why there were changes. My sales rep has told me there were no changes...
For the 20FB:
2021 base weight was 4000. 2022 is 4300.
2021 Length was 20' 8". 2022 is 21'.
2022 is also a 1/2 decrease in interior height.
The net carrying capacity has decreased from 1,025lbs down to 700lbs. What do you think has caused these changes?

Unfortunately the sales folks aren't always privy to changes, as a matter of fact many are not always versed in the details of an Airstream. I remember asking mine when I ordered my 2001 Safari a question as to whether the axles in my Safari were functionally the same axles as used in the Classics. He had no flying idea. Yeah I knew they were different in their weight capacity but I just wanted to know if they were the the same type.
You might be better to address your question to Airstream Customer Service and see if they know. We do know that Airstream can make changes in a trailer dependent upon components used and other factors within a model year. Those brochures are printed once a year. Keep in mind Airstream had refrigerator shortages close to the model change over year so some 2021 trailers have gotten refrigerators that were earmarked for the 2022 model year.

Thanks Jack. I went ahead and sent Airstream an email. It's not a big deal, but certainly enough of a change to make me curious! I'll update the thread once I hear back.

Response from Airstream below, for anyone curious:
"Thank you for the email and good catch! We take the average weights each year of the floorplan of the prior year and then make adjustments on the weights. At times, high take rates on options like a window awning packages, solar, etc. will drive the weight average up. We just like to use real world averages and update as needed.
I hope that helps. Have a great weekend."

Me too. Considering I added all of those options, it's good to see a more realistic weight provided.

Yeah especially since most of us have assumed over the years that the published weights were understated. Interesting however they didn't comment on the length of the trailer increasing slightly.
On my model year, the 30' Classic is exactly the same length of a 31' Classic. 30' 11". The difference in the two models was purely the interior layout.

I think the one spec that especially catches folks off-guard so to speak is the tongue weight. With water and waste tanks empty, but propane full and nothing in storage our 2017 20FC/FB is almost 100 lbs more than the specification tongue weight.

So I’ve got a 2015 20FC. Off the top of my head, my ballpark numbers were similar, empty weight ~4300lbs, gross at 5k, 700lb capacity for stuff…
But when I got it, the Caravel 20 was out, had replaced the Flying Cloud version. One of the things I noticed that really shifted was the tongue weight had dropped from what the 20FC was at…. Turns out, the Caravel had switched to 20lb tanks, whereas my FC had 30lb tanks. In addition, the 20FC has a cabinet over the rear window, that isn’t present on the Caravel. I’m sure there’s a few other differences.
But it is interesting to see Airstream’s reply, regarding what’s published in their brochures. Glad they responded to your question.
