MollysDad had a recent post on his table Mod for his FC 26U. I don't have a U-shaped dinette but have a 27 FB Globetrotter. We have been looking for a way to modify our table as we feel it sticks out too far into the living / entry area
We wish we had recliners but want to delay that until we take our young grandchildren camping and need that area as a bed for them.
He sent me the following link that got me thinking of ways to change our dining / lounging area to accommodate what we were trying to do.
I couldn’t figure out how to get our table top to swing around due to the GT not having any seating area in the back without moving our pedestal. I was also trying to determine a way to use a drop leaf or way to slide a table section under the top but couldn’t determine a way to get that to work either. The devil’s always in the details.
I decided to dumb it down a little. I purchased some ¾” foam insulation to play around with a configuration. The current table top is a little over 36” deep. The pedestal base is 12” square and there is a 12” overhang on the front and back sides. I made the foam top 25’ deep to give a 1” overhang on the front and the same 12” overhang on the back side. The width is the same as the original top. Attached are pictures of how this looks.
This opens up the entry to the RV the way we want. If I collapse the table down, I can use the same cushions used to make the bed into a U-Shaped seating area. The back-support cushion goes down to the table top and the seat cushion sits in front of it to cover the table top. I put some throw cushions around either side to round out the look. The few times our grandchildren join us, I will carry an 11” deep filler to make the full bed and probably use a couple pieces of Velcro underneath to keep it in place. This piece does not have to be finished to match the table top as it will never be seen.
The eating surface is a little smaller but still large enough for the 2 of us. If we ever get recliners our eating area would be even smaller.
I’ll keep the old top in case of re-sale down the road or, if we just change our mind later. I just need to find a light-colored wood to make the new top that will go with our Barcelona Blue / Grey interior.
Throwing this out to 2018 – 19 Globetrotter owners to weigh on the functionality of this set up and any suggestions for improvements.
