In my way of thinking that’s the perfect location. It gets weight off the tongue and keeps them warmer. They can’t charge below 32 degrees. Here’s my setup. This is fancier than you might be thinking of as it has 500ah of lithium, solar and a hybrid Victron 3000 inverter.

Yep, all five of them fit perfectly under the curb side twin of a front bed FC25. That’s handy as well because it’s where the wiring culminates in the infamous rats nest at the head of that bed. That’s where the battery wires from the tongue battery box used to go.

Possible dumb question. When the batteries are relocated to under either twin, is there a problem (too much weight) resulting with the AS listing to one side or the other?
Thanks

I'm assuming the box sitting in the outside storage compartment is the Victron 3000. I'm seeing only 3 Battleborn Lion Batteries. Those 3 add up to 500 Amp Hours? And I like the battery cutoff you installed!

Was this a do it yourself design or kit or pro install?

Thanks!

Looks VERY smart. Are the other two batteries set end-end behind the visible three? Or am I missing something...

And I feel your appreciation of moving weight off the tongue. Our two 6 volts at the effective end of the significant arm described by the distance between the front axle and the coupler is unwelcome.

That’s an older picture when I just had 300ah. I’ve since taken over the smaller cabinet next to it for two more. In the cloudy PNW, 300ah wasn’t quite enough as we use a lot of power with induction cooktop, tea kettle, TV, hair driers, etc. There’s 500w of solar on the roof and another 100w on a portable panel I can move around.

Yes, the blue box in the outside storage compartment is the Victron hybrid inverter/converter/charger. I took out the converter and transfer switch that came with the trailer so the Victron does all of the power management and talks with the Victron Solar controller and battery monitor.

Because of the Victron, I set it up so the rest of the trailer just thinks it’s plugged into shore power. That means all the outlets are live all the time. You just have to keep the overall load under the 3000w the Victron can supply.

I did this myself (I’m an electrical engineer). AMSolar has kits and superb support for those interested. I, however, pieced this install together myself from various sources to save a few bucks.

To answer the question of too much weight on one side, I haven’t noticed any problems. Lithium batteries are about half the weight of lead acid or AGM, about 31 lbs each. They are only about 18” off the centerline of the trailer so that helps. Lithium also means you can mount them inside (no outgassing) and at any orientation, something I couldn’t do with lead acid.

Lithium inside our 27FB GT

Hey everybody -
I’m the newby here and your battery setups
look awesome. I thought I share our Lithium project which we recently completed in putting one 200Ah Li battery inside the front compartment off our 27FB. If you have any questions pls let me know. I also went with the AMSolar package.

Best regards

Thomas

Phase two of our project. Now with solar panels and controller installed. I left space Between the switch and the MPPT for the Cerbo GX.

What size wire are you using to the battery? It looks small to me, but it’s hard to tell from the picture.

My factory setup had a 1000 W inverter with a 4 AWG feeding it from the battery and the DC bus bar with a 6 AWG feeding it. If yours is similar and you’re replacing it with a single feed wire from the new battery that then splits out, I’d recommend using at least 2 AWG. I’m not sure if you’re saying you have a 6 and 8 in parallel, but even that I’d upsize. 1000 W at 12 V is 83 A, plus your DC loads. Maybe your factory inverter is smaller though.
I’d also recommend fuse protecting each wire to its ampacity if you haven’t.
Edit: I see you have breakers in there, but can’t make out their rating. You want them to trip at less than the wire rating.

Hey AKNate -
Thanks for the advise and call outs. I have 30A breaker so my 6AWG is protected. I hardly use the inverter and if only for small loads. But to your point, I will see how it works and potentially upsize the gauge and breakers. Regards Thomas

temps in fwd compartment?

Mad - any info on the relative temps in that forward compartment? Just picked up a couple of LiFePo 100ah units and thinking either the front compartment with a little insulation directed at separating the batteries from the outside compartment door area, or under one of the twin beds in one of the internal accessible storage lockers. Here in AK - the relative temps could be an issue in the shoulder seasons. Thanks!
