Gas struts installed on cabinet door above fridge
This is an easy project. It is slightly frustrating to access the overhead cabinet when the door won’t stay up.
I used a gas strut made by Apexstone - 45N/10lb available on Amazon.
Position of the strut is crucial or the door won’t close. Here are the measurements:
Top of strut: mount the bracket 3 inches from top of door, and 5/8” in from the side
Bottom of strut: mount the bracket 1 inch from bottom of door and 1 inch in from the side

Excellent! What hardware did you use to attach to the cabinet side and underside of door?

All mounting hardware (brackets and screws) was included with struts.

Thank you for the detailed "fix". Hate holding it up with my bald head...
Couple questions - Are you measuring from the center of the strut? Did you use 1 or 2?

This is awesome! I've been thinking about how I could configure magnets to hold this door open, but this is a more straight forward approach. Thanks for the great documentation and specs.

We did the same thing, and just needed one strut. Only real issue we had is that the instructions might as well been written in Klingon -there was no way to directly translate into English that made any sense at all!
But, a quick review online of installing struts and a wee bit of extra "think" and test time and it went very smoothly. Such a cheap and easy fix...makes you sort of wonder why it wasn't done originally.

Probably because it costs a few bucks and a moment of assembly time that comes out of profit for Airstream, but don’t pay attention to my cynical viewpoint...

An easier fix and cheaper also is to get a spring type hatch support from West Marine. This also works for the large hinged mirror in the head.

Can you provide a larger image, please
The provided image of your sketch showing the dimensions doesn't enlarge like your photo of the completed strut. So when I try to enlarge the small image, it is too blurry.
We too have thought about struts others have installed, but knew exact placements of the strut ends would be challenging. So with your success and exact placement dimensions, we are ready to proceed!
Thanks for posting!

I really wanted to do this; but discovered that the height of this cabinet on our 2017 FBT FC is only 8 1/4”. So it won’t work. Still looking for a similar solution.

I get frustrated with trying to find my posts and even get good results of searching for things, but (hopefully) these two pics I think are attached will be here. I frustratingly tried struts, but that became awkward. So instead I use one 3" long surface bolt (Ace Hardware, but common) in brushed nickel. I needed a filler between the wall and the surface bolt, so I cut a piece of one quarter inch thick aluminum as the filler and a couple lock washers in between to get a little more thickness. Simply screw this arrangement wherever you want, and is dead simple, works great.

Have you looked at using a hatch support spring?

I saw this at a friend’s house - the cabinet is about 8” tall:
Sugatsune 90 degree Soft Down Lid Stay
SHSDSC301N-WH
$28.90 at eBay.
