Gas Oven vs Convection Microwave

Hey all! Looking at stepping up to a 2020 or 2021 25FBT Globetrotter and the only thing we are just not 100% in agreement on is whether to go gas top and gas oven or gas top and convection microwave.
I get the whole thing about gas ovens being nice for boondocking, but honestly, we don't boondock a bunch and when we do, we have our outdoor grill (which we use more than often anyway). But we could use your valued opinions on the convection oven. Wife enjoys baking and isn't sure whether or not she could get it done in the convection. Pros and Cons?
Thanks in advance!

Bakers much prefer the gas oven IMO. Here are some other posts to read, and a long thread to light that "oven" fire:

When you are camping in cooler weather, baking with a warm oven comforts the soul IMO.

Happy trails,

We just don’t bake that much. We had the regular gas oven in our 04, and 11. We have the micro/convection in our GT. We probably boondock more than we have hookups. We bought used and the price influenced us quite a bit. If I had to choose, I’d probably go with the regular gas oven. I think baking is possible with the micro/convection, but we only tried it a few times (had hookups in FL in Feb & Mar).

We have a gas oven in our Globetrotter. My wife uses it all the time. We don't use a microwave and actually took the microwave out of our trailer and turned the drawer into a pantry drawer. When Ultimate Airstreams had our trailer for a month we were in a 25' Flying Cloud with a convection oven. We hated the convection oven. None of our cookware would fit in it. Could not bake in it. My wife felt it was worthless and making meals for that month was a struggle.

If you actually cook or bake and don't just warm stuff up get the gas oven. The one that comes with the GT works great.

Convection microwave for speed and convenience. No problems on shore power and no problems with our particular generator when boondocking - which is most of the time for us. Other campers are quite happy when DW has goodies ready to give away - sometimes before I have camp completely set up! We are both sensitive to the byproducts of propane burning ... especially in a small space. The vent - when used in colder seasons - pulls out too much of the heat with it.

Micro/convention. We microwave far more things than we bake. And you can bake in the convection oven. My wife has done it.

It really depends upon how you camp. I can see boondockers wanting a gas oven. But if you don’t boondock much I think the convection/micro is a great way to go.

As everyone has said, you can only use the convection/microwave while plugged in to shore power or if you have a really large battery bank.

I had a microwave specced on my ‘19 Globetrotter but changed it to an oven. I am glad I did. Having both the oven and the microwave was a good call. We used both quite a bit last summer. The oven isn’t great—it heats a bit unevenly so I found I had to rotate things while they were cooking, but that’s not a huge deal.

No meal we have every had out of the oven in the Globetrotter is as good as an oven at our home. Fries soggy (even after 40 minutes), not enough room for two items, everytime we open it the smoke detector goes off, etc.

I've resorted to cooking almost everything on the grill. Put aluminum foil down, heat to normal oven temp, watch more closely as it cooks faster.

Never experienced the microwave so no comment there. But, I feel it would allow more flexibility.

We have never spent a night off the grid.

Since one can't have both a microwave and an oven on the 25 footers I'll add my vote to the convection/microwave column.

Our experience may be different than others, but we were never happy with the gas oven in our previous Classic. It provided uneven heat, as in the bottom of frozen pizzas would burn while the top didn't cook completely. and it took forever to get the temperature up to 425 to cook fries, for example. (We also had to have the oven replaced twice due to starting problems and temperature control issues, but that's another story). My wife loves to bake but not with a cranky oven and it's something she seldom does on trailer trips anyway. Giving up the oven wasn't a sacrifice for us. It's true that in cold weather firing up an oven is nice, but in hot weather it's kind of the last thing you want to do in the trailer.

So on our 2020 Globetrotter 25 we chose the convection microwave. Having a microwave makes a lot of things easy and the convection feature actually cooks stuff like fries and onion rings much better than the gas oven did. We boondock more than we stay at campgrounds with hookups but since we have at least one Honda 2000 generator along it's not a problem regardless as it runs the microwave without issue.

Anyway, you pay your money and take your choice. Good luck with yours.

We wanted both on our FC25. If you don’t need the pull-out bed you, or Ultimate Airstreams, can make a dandy cabinet for a full size picrowave and get additional work space,

Our old trailer had a gas oven. When driving to Banff we would stop at rest stops and Walmarts. Every morning I used the stove to boil water for the French press and cooked biscuits or rolls in the oven for breakfast. This also heated the interior which was nice when getting out from under the blankets and getting ready for another day of travel. At night we could make casseroles or brownies in the oven as well.

Our Airstream had the convection oven, obviously we wouldn't be able to use that on the road. We tried to make brownies and pre cooked bacon in it. Both attempts failed horribly. We were done.

Just had a new Furrion gas unit installed. Can't wait to use it in a couple weeks, and more when traveling this fall.

I am not sure why this topic keeps coming up, because an owner knows whether he needs a microwave or not. If you have a stock 25(or smaller) and you need a microwave, you either have to have the convection microwave or put a microwave on the already scarce counter space. You decide. I know we use the microwave several times each day; that is our lifestyle. We would never use the oven even once per day. I have a convection microwave at home and in the trailer; I know how to use it and it does work, but it is not user friendly. If you have 27 or larger, you can have it all.

I wanted a microwave, but not at knee level.
So mine is in the pull out drawer, and I have the gas oven. The oven is used to store bread and paper towels.

Point of order! We do, but then the bedroom is in the rear.

Point taken! However, the OP stated that he was looking at a Globetrotter 25 so my statement regarding 25 footers and having to choose either the gas oven or a microwave was with regard to that specific model and size.

Just for completeness in this thread, I thought I’d link a earlier thread where we discuss two ways to put a microwave in a FB25. There’s the method I posted earlier of taking over a portion of the pull out bed. It’s also possible to put one on the top shelf of the hall closet on a pull-out.

My wife and I learned to use the convection oven. It takes a bit of time to orient yourself to the panel and controls. Read the instruction book that comes with the unit!

I am the primary cook on this crew. Not that my wife can't cook, but we made a pack several years ago, I cook, she cleans up after. It works for us. The convection oven has some excellent features like "air fry" and "thaw," which is very convenient sometimes. I'm guessing (like we did), when starting out using the convection oven, those that did not follow the instructions, and after preheating the convection oven (as it states you have to do), it is very easy to switch to microwave mode accidentally. That will not look pretty on that apple pie you just put in for 45 minutes. Once you learn how to preheat and set the time (typically, it takes less time than the recipe calls for), it does a very nice job! And it turns the food as it is cooking! What do most people hate about their conventional trailer oven? You have to reach in and turn the food.

Cinnamon rolls in the morning, drop biscuits and sausage gravy, and wings all come out very well. Wings on "air fry" can make a mess of the inside, but using a taller bowl limits the splatter (Remember, I cook, she cleans!). It also is perfect for frozen dinners. Hey, sometimes you're just hungry, and after that long drive, you just want to eat something!

And you also have a convenient way to warm the leftovers by using the microwave.

In the Classic 30, you gain two drawers and a compartment by losing the conventional oven.

My vote is for getting the microwave/convection oven.
