2019 Globetrotter
Has anyone had their Dometic RMD 8555 Fridge act up in high wind conditions ? Ours in our 2019 27' Globetrotter did. The winds were awful. At recent rallies winds were 30-50 mph and gusty. Both times the fridge didn't cool properly. I changed the thermistor location in between rallies and it cooled like it should here at home. But again in high winds at Region 8 Rally in Lincoln, NE it malfunctioned. Today we woke up to ice thawing in the freezer. After removal of the water, we left it on and in about 2 hours traveling home it was freezing again. We were on shore power most of the time, although I did try gas the first time we had the problem with no change. The control panel on the fridge did not indicate a problem. Maybe I need a baffle of some sort for high winds ??

Running on Propane?
Dan, I assume you’re running on propane when that happens? Do you have shore power as an option to see if that makes a difference?
Running on 12V DC would be a test too but our 2019 GT doesn’t cool as well on DC. I’ve used it while driving and monitored the temps remotely; started to rise after a few hours.
I guess you could experiment with a cardboard hood over the side to deflect the straight on winds. Something like the one on the range vent. I doubt it’s coming down from the top vent but anything is possible.
Let us know what you find.

Jeffmc, I was on shore power most of the time. On propane for the drive home. Now - I've got much BIGGER troubles. The fridge quit while in my shop and on 110V. No control panel lights of any sort on to indicate a problem. And out of warranty. The RMD 8555 is German manufactured and Dinosaur didn't have a board for it a year ago when I talked to them. They are the ones who told me it was German made. It's time to replace it. Any suggestions ??

Hidden fuse…
Dan,
Sorry to hear that your fridge quit all together. We had an issue last year about this time - ours quit the night before a trip with the same symptoms.
We were still in warranty so I called JC. They couldn’t get us in but said I could take it to a Dometic authorized service center. We have a large General RV dealer near us that’s on Dometic’s list.
After determining there was no power getting to the fridge, the Tech contacted Airstream for an electrical schematic. They told him to check the fuse in the DC distribution box under the bed. He was not familiar with where the DC box was hidden under the curb side bed so he ran a new wire from the AC/DC panel under the fridge.
Later I learned where that fuse is inside the DC box. It might be worth your time to check it before you replace expensive control boards. I’ll post a photo of the fuse’s location in the DC box.
Good luck and I hope it’s something simple!
Jeff

Dan, according to the schematic under the top of the DC distribution box, that’s a 2A fuse. Not sure what type or the part number but that’s where you’ll find it.

Jeff, I jumped the gun a bit. The fridge does still cool on propane. We were in Phoenix visiting family and, until today, hadn't had a chance to check the operation on propane. In an afternoon's time there is frost on the fins of the freezer. I'll check the schematic in my manual and try to locate the fuse you indicated. thanks for the tip !!

Dan, I was checking that schematic again and it looks like there's two power feeds for the fridge, wires 6 & 8. Number 8 is 3-Way Refer Electronics.
They show No. 8's wire's color as Green/Blk. and that's the color going to that 2A fuse.
Let us know what you find!

Well, this is slightly embarrassing - but in a good way. I removed the two white plastic covers at the bottom of the one-piece enclosed "board". There were wires plugged into connectors. I wiggled them all a bit and at least one connector seemed slightly loose. I just checked and the fridge is working on 110V and has been for at least 24 hours. So, no fuse problem. The only difference I can pinpoint for sure, aside from firming up the connections, is that I had the fridge controls on propane or electric - but not on the automatic selection for this function. Thanks for the tips and advice offered. Hopefully, I won't need to use them in the future !!
