Sony DVD and JBL MM50 - Factory Items

I've read both manuals and searched about a bit on the forum.

Am I correct in understanding the DVD output cannot be routed through the JBL sound system?

If so, is the easiest fix to replace the factory Sony DVD with a different unit that will Bluetooth to the JBL?

But that can't be right, the trailer is brand new and this has to be an owner operation issue?!

Appreciate any input,

My airstream won't get delivered until April so I can't be of much help, but I expect I'll run into all the same issues as any other new owner...

When you put a disk in the DVD player and hit play on whatever buttons... do you get any sound at all?

Yes. Independently the DVD dumps sound thru the tv speakers via hdmi and the jbl dumps radio or Bluetooth device thru sound system speakers.

Just frustrating that the 2 devices (jbl and dvd) are installed adjacent each other but don't talk to each other.

Looks like that JL MM50 unit also has USB and an Aux audio input... maybe the DVD player has a headphone jack?

I don't know where the connectors are, but the AUX input worked for somebody:

Here's the MM50 manual that shows where the AUX input is & how to get to it: http://mediacdn.jlaudio.com/media/mf...1/MM50_MAN.pdf

DVD player

The DVD player hosts only movies and the sound is the same as that from the TV system. The sound system seems to play only what is on the Radio box including any USB connected music sources such as an iPhone. Works great but we had to get our own Sony DVD remote as ours somehow went walk-about before we received it in June this year (2020).

Just went thru this with our 2021 FC. The only available output from the DVD is a digital out jack. You could buy a digital to analog converter to go from that jack to the open RCA jacks in the JL MM50. You will need a power source for the converter. In our FC, you have to unscrew the box that houses the DVD and the JL unit. Our 28' unit has two audio zones and behind the JL in a mess of wires you would find at least one set of red and white RCA inputs, one set for each zone. When look at the back of the DVD, the digital outlet plug is on the far right hand. I got some pointers from AS support who cautioned me about making certain to not exceed the capacity of the inverter with the added digital to analog converter. I decided it was not worth it because my doesn't like my music anyway. 🤐 Good luck.

Mine is a 2019 but does have the JBL sound system and the Sony DVD player. My DVD player, Televisions and stereo all will play through the speakers. The DVD and TV play on the AUX settings.

GTX Eng,
Your investigation is on target, though I think it’s a JL head unit. I couldn’t believe that an Airstream would not have the basic functionality of a trailer that cost 1/5 as much. Somebody’s brother-in-law must have been put in charge. Yes, an adapter would do the trick, but be careful to choose the right model. Digital optical to analog RCA jacks, I believe.
A newer Bluetooth player would also work - I tested with our house Sony player and then noticed that it is an inch wider than the original non Bluetooth model. My wife is not keen on carpentry work in “her” trailer, so it is still what it was.
BTW, the OTA antenna is a hopelessly under designed mishmash, so don’t expect to pull in anything on that either. The JL is pretty much good only for playing through the USB input. And I ended up swapping out the TV to get an output for a sound bar to get movie sound clear enough for my old, tired eardrums.
It would have taken so little to give us so much more!!!!

We’ve got a 2021FB 23 international and the sound system is terrific with a strong woofer. The Sony Blu-ray player also provides Netflix and other apps that you want to load. It all runs through the TV if you play around with it. We connect to the stereo via Bluetooth

Here's a doodad that should work to get a signal from the TV to the JL audio system:

not sure where the audio output of the TV is, but ....

This might work. It splits the hdmi AND has a RCA sound output

This will work only if the TV has ARC. My cheapo LG does not, so I’ll be swapping out the TV in addition to installing a switch like this one. You also need to reroute the existing HDMI cable from the DVD player to the HDMI out/ARC on the switch, connect a new HDMI cable between the DVD player and the switch and run an optical cable from the switch to the head unit.

A Bluetooth transmitter might also work, if the TV has an audio out (my LG does not), but it’s likely to introduce significant audio lag making watching TV tough.

You can always toss that $50 LG TV that comes with a late model trailer. A top-of-the-line 22 inch smart TV is probably only 150 bucks. There is an HDMI cable running back to the sound system.

Looking for advice, new to RVing. I have recently bought 2016 Airstream Bambi. It has a roof top satellite. We never get any channels in tv. Please offer guidance.

Trace the coax cable from the TV to the wall jack. On the wall jack there should be a tiny button below a green LED. If the green LED is not on, push the button and turn it on. Then try again to scan for channels.

That is the signal booster, by the way. And I don't think the Bambi has a rooftop "satellite" but just an external TV antenna like super rabbit ears.

Good luck!

ExploJDC,
Help us help you.
A satellite receiver? Original or added on? What does it look like? Brand name/model? Do you have an instruction book? (Do you have any entertainment system manuals?)
Have you read the beginner’s guide to Airstreaming?
Do you get a radio signal?
If you determine that it’s OTA, not satellite, how close are you to the TV towers?
Our 2019 Bambi 22 had a batwing antenna that was marginal.
Our 2020 23FB has a mishmash that doesn’t function at all for the TV, about every other week for the radio.
Don’t get your hopes up. (See my earlier post on this thread, #10.)
Campfires are nice.... You are camping, after all.

Not sure if this helps, as I have an older system, but I must have the Sony source button set to CD/2 for the TV/DVD. Any other setting will not play thru sound system. That was what my dealer told me and it has always worked.
