Quick tongue weight poll for FC25FB loaded

Don't want to be a pain but trying to confirm I get proper hitch, can you folks please reply with loaded for travel fresh water, full LP, and your gear loaded up tongue weight? For the FC25FB (picking up a 2018).

Trying to figure out if the dealer gave me bars heavier than I need (they gave me 1200 lb bars) because I don't want to be too rough on the trailer..

Thank you for your time and input to all
Brian

I don't have weights. But it would also be useful to know what hitch and vehicle you're towing with, as those variable tend to have a greater impact on what bar should be used.

Thumbs up Welcome Aboard!!

My experience.....you'll probably be good with 200-350lb heavier than the AS stated weight.

0ur 25' Classic 870 AS, 1200 actual, fully loaded un-hitched.

Receiver weight with WD set 840lb>> 1000lb bars>> Hensley Arrow.

IMHO...get a tapered bar, not round.
A good dealer should do a trade-in if needed.

Good Luck

Bob

We are pulling a 2016 25' FC with 1200# bars. No popped rivets, no obvious stress on the trailer, after 160+ nights and an 8000 mile trip this past summer. The 1000# bars would also probably work, but that might be a little under our typical weight when fully loaded with LP etc.

Hi

What brand of hitch are we talking about?

What are the bars available for that hitch?

Thanks for helpin folks!

Well since inquiring minds want to know it's a Recurve R6.

Bars come 600 lb (max 800), 1,000 (max 1,200), and 1,200 (max 1,400)

Primarily I'm wondering if the 1,200 (max 1,400) they gave me might just be too much hence my request for real world FC25FB tongue weights..

Thumbs up

Interesting design, not a lot of performance reviews.

Weight: 106 lbs.

Manufacturer: Camco Mfg Inc-import. >>>>Chi-Knees?

Mfg Part #: 48734

Post results, keep us all in the loop.

IMHO....I would start with the 800 & work up if needed.

The design of your receiver has a lot to do with WD effectiveness.

The longer the moment arms,(frame mounts), the better the WD....ck pics.

We used 1400 bars with the Burb's OEM hitch, had to use way too much bar tension to get the WD needed.

Got a Reese ClassV Tow-Beast, changed to 1000lb bars, got all the WD needed with a much softer ride.

Sweet Streams....

Thanks Rocco appreciate it, Bob that makes some sense don't it Reese being in the hitch business and knowing how to make a better piece of hardware for the truck that improves the whole system...

My 2013 25FB Flying Cloud had a 990 pound tongue weight the last time I weighed the tongue. It's probably heavier now because we have added an inverter and bigger batteries.

I first used a Blue Ox with 1000 pound bars, towing with a GMC Yukon. Those bars gave me enough weight distribution to get my front axle back to its unhitched weight.

We weren't satisfied with the Blue Ox in terms of trailer sway, so we switched to an EAZ-Lift Elite round bar hitch (the old style) with 1400 pound bars, tightened to get the front axle a couple hundred pounds heavier than unhitched. It turns out our vehicle just behaves better with that extra weight on the front axle. I don't think we'd be happy with 1000 pound bars again.

I think 1200 pound bars will be fine. I do strongly suggest you use a CAT scale to adjust it (does your F-250 owner manual give guidance on adjusting a hitch? Many truck manuals do). But also experiment with greater and lesser amounts of tension on the bars. If you find the sweet spot leaves your front axle lighter hitched than unhitched, that's a sign to try the lighter bars.

Hi

Well ok:

You *could* have all your tanks full of water. That would be unusual, but not impossible. You also could have full LP tanks at the same time. Having the fresh water and LP full with black and gray (nearly) empty is not at all uncommon. At 8.4 lb / gallon, 100 gallons of water makes a difference. It's also half the carrying capacity of the 25'.

Groceries can get heavy. It's not all that hard to come up with over a hundred pounds of food for a week. I'd bet we have that just in the "stock can goods" that pretty much live in the trailer.

Tools and spares can easily go over a hundred pounds without anything really odd being in the mix.

Don't even start on toys. Depending on your hobbies .... yikes. (bikes and boats are pretty common)

Kitchen gear (plates, pots, glasses, ....) can hit a hundred pounds without a lot of effort.

Do you have "outdoor stuff"? Chairs, tables, shelter, rug(s), bbq grill(s), tent(s) ....

We still don't have clothing (rain gear, boots, parkas, ....) in the mix. None of this involves modifications (like added batteries).

You *can* easily drop a ton of stuff into a trailer. That's not to say you *should* drop a ton of stuff into a trailer.

Airstream lists a hitch wt of 835 with batteries and full lp tanks, figure around 100lb for your wdh hitch. Your kitchen and water tank are over the axels which does not add a lot of wt on your hitch. I usually put 10-12 gallons of water in the tank for on the road travel needs but last month we traveled with a full tank and I did not notice any change in our set up. Your 1200 lb bars are more then enough. A good thing to be concerned about though and you can balance your wt by placing a few items behind the axels if you think it is getting too hitch heavy.

We have a 2014 25' FB with twin beds. Three storage lockers in front, one each side and one in the front. Only outside storage other than rear bumper. 3 overhead cabinets plus under bed storage, lots of stuff in the front. Dropped the bottom of my battery box 3 extra inches for 6 volt lifelines, and a pro pride hitch. (Just the head weighs 75lbs) Bars ,chains adjusting crank each side, that's extra. Fully loaded we weigh in on sureline at about 1000 to 1100 lbs depending on the day Our TV is 3/4 ton p/u . We did pull with a 1/2 ton for a while with 1000 lb bars, popped a few rivets here and there, part of the learning curve I suspect, tried 1400 lb bars all was good. When we went back to 3/4 ton , on Sean's advice we stayed with 1400 lb bars....slick as .... opps family channel. Less adjustment so bars are level with trailer giving maximum movement . For us it's a great setup.
The people who make these (any) hitches are usually full of good advice. Got a question go to the top!
Happy camping

Okay, I'm a newbie at this. Where are you all going to be able to weigh each axle and the tongue weight? I'm pretty sure I'm okay with my set up (27FC FB Twin towed with a F150 all maxed out) and in the few hundred miles I've towed so far nothing seems "weird" nor does my truck sit funny, but I'd still love to make those measurements for the record (I'm a scientist, after all!). Thanks!

A couple of "rules of thumb" for hitching. Choose spring bars that require about 5" (five inches) of spring bar bend to cause the hitch weight to move about a third of the weight to the front axle and a third to the rear axle of the TV. Leaving a third to be distributed to the TT axles. This is about the same bar weight specs as the hitch weight loaded ready to travel. This combination will give you a good spring action to relieve road pounding on the front of the TT. In 47 years of travel I have only seen one spring bar fail from overload. On my rig, I have used the Hensley 1,400# bars with a hitch weight as high as 1,750# to Alaska and back with no bar problems. Early on, I had problems with the TV hitch receiver twisting (flexing) too much when the bars were draw up. A Curt Class V took care of that problem. That was a problem with GM for a while. It has been corrected now GM says.
